My 91 3FE is averaging 7MPG around town. Driving on 33x10.5x15's with no cats currently. Other than that, I think everything else is the way it was out of the factory. I'm not complaining, just wondering if that's about what everyone else is getting out of their rigs.
I get about 10mph with a little more open driving but still mostly stop and start. Also have the ARB and a 4x4labs but no lift. If you are doing real town driving then 7 doesn't sound too bad.
My cruiser tips the scales at just over 6300lbs most days without a load. Winter time around town with limited freeway I pull around 8.5mpg with the 1fz. Summer time just over 10mpg and if I do 30/70 city freeway I can get just over 11 with 12.2 being my best on summer fuel with exclusive freeway this last summer. Keep in mind we are on winter blend fuel at the moment so your average fuel economy is going to be poor. Winter blend tends to carry far less power per gallon so it takes much more to do the same job. I wouldn't worry too much, but you may look into cleaning your engine up both internally and externally as well as a valve inspection after internal cleaning.
Holy Hell!!!! I just figured out that just because the air filter doesn't look plugged does not mean it isn't!!!!
hah! I kinda feel bad about how hard I've been working my Lexus..... but it's much peppier with a new air filter now!! Cant wait to recalculate the poor fuel economy....
Yeah, never count out the air filter. If it's OEM, I think it's washable. When I got my 80 the filter was nasty and had obviously never had any love. Changing it made a massive difference in pep.
I just calculated the mpg on my 91, 33x10.5x15s, no lift, spare on a swing out, but otherwise stock, and calculating for odometer error, I'm getting a little better than 12 mpg on the local twisty mountain roads, there's no city and no freeways nearby. Getting 7 mpg would be cause for alarm. I never got less than 9.5 city/hwy with my unmodified FJ62 and that included towing 3000 pounds of loaded 6x10 enclosed cargo trailer.
I don't mash the skinny pedal, but it gets along just fine.
The difference in your tire size from OEM is significant. If you're basing your MPG off your odometer, you're going to be off about 1 mpg...not that 8 mpg is good. (Based on a 15% difference between indicated speed and actual speed on original tire vs tire now). Also, you have to figure off road tires have a lot of rolling resistance. I get 12-13 in my 62 and 11-12 in my 80 around town.
I didn't think about my odometer not accurately reading my mileage due to bigger tires .
I drive about 20 miles a day so it's not that big of a deal. I want operating at its best though. Thanks
94 went from a solid 10mpg in town to 11 after desmog,injector service,running 305/70/16 tires stock gearing.
my 94 f150 4x4 with 4.9 and 5 speed with 33/s got the same
