Sorry, I accidentally posted the same thing twice, so I edited the second one to say double post.
HAH! I thought I screwed something up.... :)

Unfortunately it does in CA, you can still pass smog but fail visual. We also have 2 classes of smog stations as well, regular ones and "star" smog stations which I believe have much stricter tests.

It's ridiculous. Some stations are more lax than others though. We'll see what happens with the fuel tanks.
Ya, as a former Cali resident, I am not an expert, but we are told that there is quite a bit of variability in approach to visuals. Add to that that many LCs came with dual tanks from the factory. You could have technical non-compliance while passing tailpipe smog and vacuum test routine. No smog, no evap discharge but "we just don't like that accessory." Go figure

I have a little experience with CA smog with my more interesting cars. CA has switched to OBD-II scanning on later generation cars. ~2002 model year up no longer have a tailpipe test. They only look to see that all emissions codes are "ready" and good within the OBD-II scan. Though this wouldn't make a material difference for an aux tank unless it effects evaporator operation such that it affects that specific obd-ii code.

The variable tricky part is the visual inspection. They will usually check the gas cap to see that it's good and tight. Not sure how tuned in they are to the existence of dual fillers? That would really be my only hesitation. They would be ignorant to everything else underneath, even if they took a quick glance. At least for the 13 gallon. The larger tanks may be more obvious that there's some aftermarket component installed that would be emissions related.

Great comments, thanks.

Since I’m in CA and I don’t believe we can use these as an AUX tank legally, I would be interested in a 24 gallon in stainless steel to use as a water tank.
We understand and working on a line of stainless steel tanks for potable water.

Also researching the development of a line of replacement main tanks for US rigs to avoid the CARB prohibition on aux fuel tanks. We already offer replacement mains for 60, 80, 100 Series along with Tundra, Tacoma and FJ Cruiser as below. No promises, but possible....

I drink lots of water and have a baby who has explosive poos everyday. I almost requested 45 gallons of water. Hahaha.
Sounds like a growth market...... :)

So basically anyone in CA is SOL when they try to smog, as always. Bummer.

I've smogged my 80 series a couple of times since installing the factory (Australian) subtank. The smog tech didn't even look under the rear of the car. He just stuck the probe in the tailpipe and ran the test. He did look under the hood, but nothing changes there, obviously.

For the 2000 and later model year cars, they just plug in to the OBDII port and scan. I really doubt you'll have any issues with a subtank at smog in my opinion. YMMV

Worst case you could remove it and re-install for inspection. Or with a combination of kayak.com and realtor.com, rid yourself of your California overlords. :hillbilly:
Ya, just attach with zip ties for easy removal/reinstallation :)

We ARE considering the option of an upgrade in the form of mud/dirt colored powdercoat as camouflage vs. aluminized silver. Make it less likely they notice IF they bend over and take a peek, ya?

PROTOTYPE INSTALLED

Here is the "Small" tank in Cole's 200. A few minor adjustments on the brackets, but nothing major and easy to accommodate in the production models. The tank hangs just a little too low to use the tire mount crossmember, so Small production tank will need to be around 1/2" more shallow. Capacity estimated at 13 gallons, will do volume test to confirm.

We will modify this truck's crossmember slightly to fit, so no worries. The "notch" provides plenty of room for the charcoal canister and hoses, so we are very happy.

More to follow on filler, lines and such, but the truck is on its way to some adventures this weekend.
