Just purchased the Highway 22 kit to wire my FJ40. I have a GM V8 in the vehicle with a 350 automatic. I am up in the air about ordering a Flaming River 30 inch tilt column with a 1 3/4 column width. I have read that I will save a ton of time in the rewire if I use a gm column. Any one do the Highway with stock column and have some pointers. Either way, I am going to document my journey. I plan to use stock front and rear signals, aftermarket headlight switch and aftermarket gauges. I went with the 22 so that if I drop in a EFI in a year or two and a/c etc...I will have the capacity. I plan to keep this forever.

One more note

Forgot to mention that the vehicle has zero wiring in it and it is a 74. Nada. There is not a wire left except for what is in the column and the spark plug wires.

I did a Highway 22 on a '77 FJ40 with ramjet 350, 700r4, and AC. After reviewing wiring diagrams, I ordered the Flaming River column and made my life easier. Click on the blue letters of my sig-line for the details.

flaming river vs GM

I believe if you get either the FR or a GM junkyard column with the column mount ignition then your harness will already be GM connector style and should just plug in or include the connectors to configure that way. Prolly plug and play or easily configured:meh:

but wiring in any column is a piece of cake, ignition included or not---the 74 has the dash mount ignition doesn't it? Would you like to use that? Adapting from the column connector to the dash ignition is easy to do if that is what you want

or are you really wanting a tilt column with ignition?

I used a FR tilt with no ign and it came with a late model connector so I just pulled the TS and horn wires out of the connector, put bullets on it, and ran it to my OEM harness

i understand you are starting from scratch so it is a little different, but you still have the option to use the dash ignition and hazards if you want.

one thing I found out though since I did not use the hazard switch on the column was that it would make my turn signals inop if I switched the column hazard switch as if I were trying to put the hazards on-- turned off again and the turns worked fine

Glad to see someone else taking this journey.....

My 72 has a 327V8, Turbo 400, Orion... with a ball oh wires under the dash.

Guess we can compare notes.

Wire Harness Ron Francis

I just received a Ron Francis catalog after emailing for information on their wire harnesses. Wish I had waited before I ordered the Highway harness. This catalog has everything, weatherpak, flashers etc...The catalog reminds me of the old Advance Adapters catalogs. Tons of information and FAQ's. They also boast that they provide life time tech support. They sell wiper kits, hazard kits, everything and anything you could want. Just wanted to put this out there for any one looking. I am going to call on Wednesday and see if the techs have FJ40 information.

i will be entering this part of my build pretty soon, i just took the factory wire harness out this past weekend...

i have a 350 chevy with 4 speed toyota tranny.. i am looking to swap out my column with something that has tilt..

where did you get the catalog from??? would be interested in looking at one..

i have been looking at the ez wire wire harness on ebay. i have read pretty good things about them here on the forum..

Wiring Info

You can go to Ron Francis Wiring and see all of the information. I had emailed them to ask if they offered a FJ40 specific harness. They sent the catalog. The kits look well made. I had already ordered the Highway set up and it should arrive on Thursday. I am still debating on the tilt column. I know it would save time. I'll make that decision when I begin to rewire.

i was on the highway auto wire web site..

i was checking out there highway 22 and highway 15 kits..

what would be the advantage of using the 22 vs the 15. i know more circuits but the 15 also has the availability of adding a/c..

Highway 22

I went with the 22 so that I would have plenty of room for going EFI or other items. I received the kit today. the 22 is pretty large. The kit is very well laid out in individual bags. I can't start for a few days. It will pretty much only fit in the glove box or under the seat. I am going to try to figure out how to mount the panel and leave a foot or so of wire to be able to pull the panel out to access it. I may rethink this, but Iwould like to try.
