RocDoc, Are you doing the under the truck or did you drop everything, or are you redoing your spare? Did you get it done?

For the record, I am running ATF in the case right now, and can definitely tell the difference in terms of clunk.

How did this work out for you? I believe now that I have TC fluid leaking into the trans, my AT temp light came on and I can smell something burning, it smells like differential fluid. I need the truck this coming week so this may be a patch if it worked out for you.

Thanks for any input, Jeff

I didn't get too far with it yesterday before I had to go for a bike ride to track down some more sockets (32mm + 36mm) and something to de-stake the stubborn nut. The second nut is de-staked, but that's as far as I got before Saturday night started.

Well, got the whole thing torn apart, and found it pretty easy other than the stake nuts and the time it took to clear off the old gaskets. Here's a pic of the tranny output shaft.

And here's a pic of why it isn't back together  I think it was either the high-low inner lever misaligned, or else I didn't get the high low shift fork shaft lined up with the pocket in the rear case. Either way, there was a nice loud pop as I was bolting the two halves back together followed by equally loud swearing. Good thing I have a spare in the garage.

Beer time

It's back together thanks to the spare case I have in the garage. After a short test-drive, there is no more clunk  and no new sounds. Time for a shower and bed.

Good to hear that there are no extra sounds with the McNamera gear. I think I'll go that route also.

Always good to have a spare.

Did you drop the tranny to do the work or did you work under the truck?

What tools (socket sizes) did you end up needing for the process?

Thanks, Jeff

I'll take it out this evening and get it up to highway speed to make sure, but nothing was apparent on surface streets (or low range at surface street speed)

I even scammed the 4wd indicator switch off of the spare, so now my indicator light works for the first time since I've had the truck :bounce: I think I might snip the low position switch so that I can have 2 low (no automatic front axle engagement when it's in low)

I dropped the tranny cross-member about 5 or 6 inches, that was enough to get good access. Aside from your standard tools, you'll need something to unstake the nuts (or impact wrench), 32 mm and 36 mm sockets for the stake nuts, something to hold the output flange while you turn the stake nuts (I used a large crescent wrench backwards). Seal drivers would be handy, and if you want to change bearings in the output line up, you might need a press (mine were good, so I just replace the idler shaft and bearings, and the bearing on the back of the input shaft since it needed to come off anyway).

Working on the internals was easy peesy, it was just those damn stake nuts and cleaning the gasket surfaces that took more than their share of time.

Be careful putting the case back together. If it needs to be forced, something is binding (in my case the hi/lo lever).

HTH

Hey RockDoc - did you have to deal with any US Customs issues when you ordered the gear?

Nope, but I'm in Canada. ;) Just had to pay a bit of duty.

RockDoc, How long did it take to get the mcnamara gear in from Australia?

I don't know about RockDoc's order but I had mine in hand eight days after I PayPal'd the money. Super fast!

Really? I had a buddy that ordered something from over there and it took like 3 weeks to get in.

Did you call him a order it or do it by email and then send the money over paypal?

Did it all by email. Seems like he replied to my email almost instantly, we sorted out what it was that I needed and how much. I Paypal'd the money and, IIRC, he replied within a day or so that the gear had been sent. Very painless and smooth transaction. SomehowI had expected more problems and delays. This was a pleasant surprise.

Same experience here, except I bank transferred the money (they do paypal now?) Was a week and a half at most from when the money was in their hands to when the gear was in mine.

Thanks guys that makes me feel alot better. I will start the process of getting one in my hands today.

Another question astr, RockDoc:

About how much for shipping? I need to try to figure how much money I am going to end up spending?
