A true "Mudder"...looking for trails/runs even while on vacation :D.

How was your trip, Phil?

Bring some goggles to keep the rocks/dirt from the rotor wash out of your eyes. Some high strength rope/strap to toss into the rotor blades, I hear the border guards have a great sense of humor and love that type of prank,,, maybe.:whoops::hillbilly:

Sounds fun but we should take something to return fire. My black and white rig will get shot to pieces. Can I ride with you? :)

I dont know about spending the night camping out there. Too much nighttime activity from my experience.

Besides, the rotor wash would get our bags full of sand.

not a whole lotta elevation change along the Camino del Diablo

for which you need multiple permits anyway :meh:

Trip was great, there is some beautiful very remote beach access between Rocky Point and El Golfo that would be perfect for a multi day trip. If you are not comfortable with the fence road you definitely would not be comfortable in a Mexico remote beach trip. If you are interested and self sufficient PM me. I'm sure I will be returning soon.

This would not be a trip for ones with weak spines and no night travel or camping. All reports of rotor wash I have heard is at night so...

One of CSC nonactive members has done part of fence road (solo) and gave it a thumbs up and said he would be game to explore more. This is a feeler to see if there was any member interest.

I have traveled the road east of Nogales and it is very scenic and also not flat and would recommend it. The area I'm looking at is East of Ajo. Camino del Diablo is a flat dirt road and does not see the elevation changes as the fence road. As for permits I'm waiting a for reply from someone very familiar with the fence road.

How about we (you and I) just drive down to Nogales, make a left and head for New Mexico. We should be able to knock it out in a day or so. Bring some guns though, I know I will.

Let me know when. Weekend only for me.

:cool:Tiss the time of year. We should consider something with some services first to get more people interested and do a day trip so you know what you are getting into. Do you have a current passport? Kids under 16 need only a certificate of birth.

RV park $22/day (kid safe)- water, showers, power, and flushing toilets
If paid in advance I can get a group area

I've run the road south of Sierra Vista/Miller Canyon rd. to Douglas (we used to haul ocotillios out of there), well graded (I sould say dragged, to check for footprints). Cool idea, put Montezuma pass on the list..

I don't know if regulations have changed over the years, but there used to be a rule that we got caught up in that if minor children were traveling with only one parent, there had to be a written notarized statement from the other parent that it was ok for the kids to leave the country.

hey phil here i am, i ran the section from lukeville to yuma, awesome drive !!!!! everything from helicopters to mexican nationals, even a HUGE bottle of kalua for $7 !!!

i opt to leave out some details over the web but its a big thumbs up from me.

as far as permits, i dont know the definite answer, it might be a gray area but your not on the el camino rd and your not technically going through the range, only skirting the south edge. there has always been a road there, (peurto blanco) and it was always a public road. during my moonlight encounter with the border patrol i was not asked to show a permit, but i was given a lecture and stern warning about the dangers of the area, the guys were sure not all my dogs were barking being out there solo, but after the initial contact they really lightened up.

my return trip was the old 84 hiway,,, or as much as i could string together,,, thats a real cool drive also if you dont want to take your chances along the border.

edit: i want to run the section between lukeville and nogales next time. most of the stories you hear come from the area between arivica and nogales, the eastern 3rd of the length i plan to do next, and, if the border patrol doesnt keep me out i want to spend the night in arivaca. the section from nogales to south of sierra vista is actually a scenic drive in the coronado park? anyway i really want to drive the border along the whole length of the state.

It has been quite a few years since I have been down along the border, but my understanding is that Puerto Blanco Drive across Organ Pipe is closed to vehicular traffic because of smuggling activities. If you are going to make it across from Lukeville to Arivaca, there used to only be one road across the mountains from the border area near San Miguel through the site of Buenos Aires to Sasabe. It was a neat drive through Presumido Canyon. I understand that road was also closed because of its use by smugglers.

Things could have changed.

Phil,

Do you have any dates in mind? I think we are headed down with the families over Thanksgiving weekend.

If you haven't gotten a passport before this trip happens, no fear you can still attend as long as you have applied for a passport. You will need a valid state issued picture ID, a copy of your birth certificate, and the stamped receipt of your passport application to get back into the USA. It took about three weeks to get my passport card in the mail, but I did do Rocky Point 3 days after I had applied for it. To be on the safe side call Lukeville to verify that this is still an OK practice.

And :flipoff2: you guys, I'm still around, I've just been slammed at work for the last few months. I do try to check in here from time to time, but haven't had time to post.

Vaya con dios mi hermanas y hermanos!

I'd love to do a trip like this, but have no experience with Mexico or making travel plans. Pick a date Phil, plan it all out and im there.
