Anyone willing to make an armchair diagnosis on this 100? (1 Viewer)

Hey - I'm looking at a cruiser long distance and the person sent me this video. Anyone have an idea what it might be? Clanking backing up then squealing going forward. Then sounds like it has a locker that is locked on pavement. Doesn't have lockers. Blown front diff?

Tires squealing on pavement usually means the center diff is locked.

Huh, the click does sound like a bad front differential. But it must be only sort of broken or you wouldn’t get that squeaking on corners because of the front and rear diffs fighting each other….becaise the center diff is locked or perhaps stuck on.
Any backstory from the seller/reason to hope this is an anomaly and not indicative of the state of all systems?

It's one of those distance things. Non-native speaker and self-described "old lady" selling her out-of-country son's car. She doesn't know much about it. Trying to get her to facetime so I can run her through the switches. Sounds a little suspect, but I don't really think it's a scam. Anyway, thanks for the input!

Maybe it's just because I haven't drank enough coffee yet this morning, but this made me laugh. How mad was your wife?

Yeah, I popped a front diff and this isn’t a front diff. It might be a Center diff lock, plus a bad belt accessory plus a bad CV axle.

The truck would lock up and make a hell if a clank if the front diff had broken teeth.

Thanks all for your input. I think I'll get try to get the seller to take it for a PPI, then fly out with a return ticket just in case. My backup plan, which probably should be my main plan for the $$$, is just throw more into my super solid 98 with 325k miles.

I think front diffs can make a variety of sounds—I had one go on the highway several days after an Ill-advised attempt to drag a log out of a trail in reverse. It sounded a lot like this and didn’t really lock up.

"Selling for an Out-of-Country Relative" and variations of that as a For Sale narrative are almost as ubiquitous/notorious as the Nigerian Prince scam. Go to the Clubhouse section of Mud (Tab is up at the top collection of drop-down tabs) and select a club in seller's area and pay a guy some gas or beer money to go lay actual eyes on it before you throw any more money or effort into it. My 2 cents. The out-of-country aspect is a set-up for title issues further on in the process. If you can get someone to go take a look, have them verify the title exists and the VIN matches the title.
