mine came w/o instructions I searched and found discussion on pros/cons but no intalls

It might be straightforward once I am under the 40 but just curious if anyone has a pic of an installed one

any issues on install?

I've heard nothing but bad things about it...

Rebuild your drum.. I rebuilt mine, did the 2 seal trick, and all new internals.. It works like a champ!

Stalls the rig in first gear when you let the clutch out...

Instructions are not included because there's nothing to it....just get after it.........

I've installed a couple... works great....

disc

Yep,

Figured

I am going to install it cause hey it wasn't free ya know. If it serves its function I'll be happy. Not crazy about messing with motor mounts to fool with the drum brake after my 4 speed install so I will give it a shot.

At least one person is happy with it I see, i have heard some neg comments on it but I guess I'll see soon enough.

In any case I'll post up the good, the bad, or the ugly:p

I'm about to replace my shoes. Whats that?

I didn't see anything about the 2 seal trick on a search.

Search for double seal parking brake...

I installed one a couple of years ago. The disc wasn't true and ended up burning up the pads. For me it is garbage. I took it off. To keep my rig in one spot on any slope I just put it in first. You will have to drag my 35/13.50's to move it. Good luck with yours. Let us know if it works. I may just have a new disc made...

I installed the MAF front disc brake conversion. It works like a champ. To be honest were I to do it again I would probably do something different now as I have significantly more experience wrenching and the kit was a little spendy, but again, it works like a champ and was an easy install.

Best of luck.

60s

funny thing is I saw more pos comments on installs of the maf brake in the 60 forum. But yes I will give it a go and post up--hope it works out

For me I cant see the sense in messing with motor mounts to service a brake pad

My old 40 had this set-up. Worked great til the seal leaked again. My brother has it now, but if he ever gets rid of the 40 I think I would take that back. Along with some other small stuff.

Are you talking about t-case brake or at the rear wheel?

I can't imagine the 60 crowd going to the expense of t-case brake on a split case box..........

I'm a little confused too... You don't have to go anywhere near the motor mounts to take apart the T-case drum-brake...

You have to take the rear drive shaft off that's about it......

He put a 4 speed into a previously 3 speed 40. The rear crossmember is in the way to get the parking brake drum off. To do this, you have to loosen up the motor mounts and drop the rear of the engine/tranny/tc down to get the drum off. That is why he is looking at going with the disk parking brake. Sheesh people, keep up! ;)

Keep up with what?

I'd moved the cross member long before now on that situation.....

So where does the 60 come into this scenario?

the 60 mystery

Keep in mind I know zero about a 60. When I read the posts on the MAF brake kit I may have got that wrong---forget that, prolly just my mistake

I understand the cross member could be cut and moved but that makes me less happy than messing with the motor mounts

with the 4 speed being longer the drum brake housing is so close to the cross member that you cant pull it to service the brake---as mentioned you can tilt the case down by loosening up the mounts or cut and move the cross member for clearance

or install a disc brake

I dont like line lock cause it is all or nothing and you may have reason to use it as an emergency brake plus if you ever ship the vehicle as I will a good parking brake may help prevent damage and I will be shipping overseas so line lock might even be illegal and I wouldnt trust it to hold for a couple weeks on a ship

I was getting all excited there for a moment about a 4 speed w/split case transfer in a 3spd. frame:frown:

Guess What?

Well I took the rear motor mounts out and pulled my drum brake and went to install the MAF disc brake set up.

It wont fit--the rear caliper will not clear the cross member :bang:
Now this is only because I put a 4 speed tranny and transfer in my rig

The point of this was to be able to service the brake in the future without dropping the motor down

So my only choice it seems is to cut out the cross member and weld it back in to use the disc or go back to the drum and live with the motor mount issue.

I decided to go with the drum

since my pads fell off when I took it apart it is time for some new ones I guess

THE DISC BRAKE DOES NOT SOLVE CROSS MEMBER CLEARANCE

Lesson learned and not a cheap one!

awww bill sorry to hear that! i feel like MAF should have known this.. esp by now... how old are these trucks and how common of a swap is it that youre doing! hopefully you'll be able to find someone who can use it...

on a side note would you be able to grind the caliper to clear the crossmember or is there too much interference?
