Trunk Monkey,
I was in your situation this week. I had my 80 in the garage working on exhaust issues and the wife's 100 needed a CV boot and an oil change (my 50 gallon drum is full).

I called the dealer to get a quote on the CV boot. They told me $320 plus tax. I said no thanks, I will do it later. He immediately came down to $250. I let them do it.

So I got an oil change, CV boot replaced, tire rotation/balance, and "mini detail" (detail was free because they took so long) out the door for $353.00. Well worth it for me. I have a good relationship with the dealer from buying all my parts from them for the past five years.

Moral of the story: Get to know your local dealership and talk them down on labor, seems everything is negotiable at a dealership.

Hello Everyone!

Thanks for mentioning us hoser! We are currently looking for a sample OEM axle so that we can engineer a new stronger set of axles for the 100-Series Cruisers. If anyone would be willing to send a half-shaft in for development they would receive the beta set free of charge for testing purposes!
Thanks

Holy crap! Someone jump on that!

Cool! I'll just wait for you guys to develop/test the new HD version and replace before I destroy anything! After a few hundred miles of off road use over the last few weeks, no major leaks...sand, mud, rock, dirt, underwater, overwater, etc... :steer:

My 99 has 160k and has had a vibration when accelerating. I put the medium OME lift on it last week and it seems to have gotten worse. Could this have anything to do with the CV joint or is it something else.

well i just got quoted $886 (labor + parts) to replace my CV boots. 7 hours of labor...WTF.

Toyota dealership

Rip off.

I'd buy new CV joints and boot kits. HAve a dealer R&R the joints and do the boot kits on your old joints. When you need boots again you have 2 hot swaps ready to go.

i am wondering if that is the cost to replace with new joints. 7 hours seems like a lot of time.

I had no choice b/c i took the truck to dealership b/c of noise coming from the back breaks. The pad was 100% gone and grinding into the rotor. I couldnt move it and had to get it done there and both boots are torn as well

They started on it at 10:30 we'll see when they call me.....i am so pissed.

i really like the Service rep and she is giving me 15% off all parts and labor plus she is going to see if the 7 hours can be adjusted....

1. No on the new joints. They're about $325 each..about.
2. The 7-hours is BS. Call another dealer and get a hour quote. Takes 3-minutes. Call you dealer on it. 7-hours is BS.

so yeah, i called two other stealerships and they were just a little over $500. Said 2 hours a side.

So i called up my service girl and she said she would call them and get a true cost....

Update: She just called me back and said "did you explain to them you have a lift in it?" I said there is no difference between my T-Bars and the OEM T-bars except they are a bit stiffer. WTF. I fxxxing hate Dealerships

The LABOR is identical whether or not you have a lift. They mark the bars with a pen and they reinstall them at the same place. Call here back and tell her to stop the bull.

New CV's are around $4-500 each. Then add in labor to swap them out. Boots kits are about $40 each. What I learned from my experience is that dealer's won't quote work on LC's from alldata (source for # of hours a job takes) because LC's take more time to work on, jsut a So, when I got quoted 3 hours of labor for mine, that's a quote for something like a Camry. Real price on mine should have been $329 per side, dealer set price.

8 bills is high, but not loony. And "3 minutes" is from someone who does no work on their own truck.

what is funny is that i've called this dealership out twice before. They are use to Westport moms that come in with a fist full of cash and say "ok". They know i work on my own truck so i am surprised they would try and pass this by me.

truly shops like this piss me off. The problem is i will now have to drive 20 miles to get to the next dealership.

$4-500 is very high for the joints.

8/08...I paid $367/joint and had no time to use my main guy for a lower price.

His labor price is loony compared to what I pay.

8/08...I paid $367.71 for BOTH joints to be replaced AND have new boot kits put onto old joints for the future.

Yes, his dealer is LOONY! :)

i tend to agree that my dealer is loony, however, the shop guys know what they are doing. 5 of them have been there for over 20 years and the others from 12-17 years

so i am getting charged $1250 for new CV boots, rear rotor and pads + labor for all.........i feel completely raped.

they said it took 6 hours for the boots.
