They are over charging you...no doubt. I've been treated very fairly by my dealership. Maybe it's because I bought it new there. Maybe it's because they know I know my stuff in the way I speak to them. Maybe it's because they know I have a private guy who does a lot of my stuff. I don't know. Heck, I even have the shop foreman, a LC owner as well, review every job their service team does on my trucks. He makes sure it's done right.
Looks like I paid for 4-hrs labor to have my CV's swapped and the two old ones rebuilt with new boot kits.
It takes me quite a bit longer than 4-hours to replace 2) CV shaft assemblies and rebuild 2) CV shaft assemblies. Not that I'm in their league but I've done this more than a few times now

Out of curiosity are you removing the wheel as an assembly or disassembling the wheel assembly to get to the shaft?
When the term CV rebuild is used are we just talking about disassembly, clean, re-lube , and new boots?
If you're not repacking the hub or replacing the bearings there, it's def. easiest to undo the lower ball joint and swing the hub up and away.
I agree..The question is about time and what procedure you and the dealership is using?
I have never rebuilt a 100 CV but I have removed the shafts and there is a lot less time involved is you swing the assembly.
I've got it down to 90-minutes per side for swapping in a new/replacement CV axle shaft assembly; but that doesn't leave any time for sipping beer along the way

And yes: That's if I just move the steering knuckle out of the way and thus bypassing dealing with the hub and wheel bearings.Rebuilding (actually rebooting with a thorough flushing/cleaning of the CV cup, race and balls) the CV axle shaft assembly takes me about the same amount of time on the bench (90-minutes) or so per unit. I don't have a parts washing tank so you might be able to speed this up with one.
If you're having them replace or reboot CVs, then they're going to do the same, just move the hub as a whole. It's what the FSM calls for also. No reason for them to dig into the hub unless you're having it repacked/replaced as part of the deal, but then you'll add on more time.
If you're doing it at home (and don't dig into your front end every weekend like spresso
) you'd be wise to at least repack the bearings while you're there, maybe only adds an hour.anyone have an update on these? Looks like im in the market for new ones
Funny. I've got Pint's old rig now (for the last 1.5 years) and my DS is starting to leak. Time for a reboot. Or at 160K, should I just buy brand new CV's? Got a big road trip planned this summer.
Liam - Did you break an axle or do you just need new CV boots?
i've been leaking grease for awhile, every since i put the lift and 35's on. I didnt do a diff drop at the time and it's been clicking for a few months. My mechanic is taking them apart when doing the 90K service and if they are fine then he is just going to reboot, if bad im gonna replace.
I need to get a diff drop asap.
Who'd you get to do yours? Camelback?
