Anyone have a CV Joint Failure? (1 Viewer)

I could not swing the hub far enough down and away to slide the CV out. I think it would be possible with a longer shock (Bilstein in shorter then OME). I had to pull the hub.

I'm rebooting my CV's right now (done one), I only dropped the bottom ball joint, it may be easier to drop the top by the sound of it, but you definitely don' have to do the hub.

I do have OME replacement shocks, but I'm sure there is nothing to stop you doing it with "OEM" shocks.

I don't do it on a regular basis. But I took a water hose to the hub when it was off and got gobs of dirt and little rocks out. Spinning the rotor while water is pouring over it flushes it out quite nicely.

Next time I will do the same and pull the hub as that is how I know.

I had a CV grenade on me yesterday. It literally exploded with the balls, circlips and other metal ejected out over NV Hwy 359. Those spline-less hub flanges I've been carrying around finally paid off

It effed up our weekend though; but special thanks to Locrwln for assisting in the repair!

Original CVs? I would think you were do if so. Not many 100s in US have been used like yours.

Were there any warning signs?

No not the original CV's that came with the truck. But Toyota OEM. I don't know how many miles on it but if I had to guess I'd say around 50-60k. For those running trails and more so the ~2.5" of front lift that puts the CV's even more of an acute angle...I think, at least for me, these need to be on a 40-50k mile replace PM. Sad...but true.

And although RCV has not intro'd a CV for the 100 I heard from a local racer that has had issues with their boots puking on his truck without resolve. So OEM continues to be, again for me, the best and only choice right now.

Beno's shipping on Tuesday ;)

We had just gotten off a relatively mundane trail...turned back at 10,000' due to snow. Apart of the turn around, made all the more interesting because we were on a narrow shelf trail and I had the KK in tow, I had to jack-knife and crank to the steering stop to get turned around. But fully knowing this puts a CV/birf at its weakest point, I just basically idled through it. But because of the nose down fully cranked position the upper control arm adjuster popped; first time for this but I've been with a 4R friend that had it happen so maybe not all that uncommon? So when we got back down to the main gravel road I immediately noticed it pulling to the right.

Got out and inspected it and noticed the DS outer band had come off and was puking. I've, like many, have run these things this way for a couple hundred or more miles so I didn't think too much about it. Down the gravel to the highway and after about 10-minutes at 55-60mph I felt the vibration and then saw the parts blowing across the opposite lane

I was pissed I didn't have my spare CV...otherwise I'd be reporting this on Monday and would have spent the weekend with the homies camping and exploring.

I blew a CV a couple of weekends ago, on a tight bend up a steep track with lots of right foot needed to keep moving, shattered the ball cage. It was a OEM CV with about 10k on it :frown: I was a little surprised how easily it blew, I'm sure I pushed harder plenty times on the old CV without blowing it :hmm:

I had to replace my CV axle two weeks ago...driving from Charleston SC to Washington DC for meeting....and went out near Durham NC. Started with vibration like rough road...then would go away..then later like I had a flat tire. Stopped and tires are great...but cv axle is smoking a little from burning grease (heat)....drive slow to Toyota shop 5 miles away and confirmed it was bad. Replaced it and I drove rest of way without a problem...but in my haste to make it to DC before midnight as I had lost 5 hours already...I did not get old CV Axle for observation later to see exactly what happened. It never came apart but at slow speeds it would bind and pop....

I think it may have damaged the diff too as now I have a sound like a flat spot on a tire but is only able to be heard with windows up--ac off--radio off...or while up on rack. If it is indeed screwed started talkign with JT about 4.88 to replace.

After I get the diff worked on and straightened out...I may save up and replace the DS CV Axle so I know they are both good and will keep the original one still left for an emergency trail fix if needed.

These have 154k miles on them...so guess about time to need replacing plus installing lift likely helped the issue with it going in same pattern for 10 years and now I have it changing pattern of rotation with increased angles from Ironman lift. LOL

The 'exploded' view ;)

It was that cage that broke on mine as well, seems to be the weak link in that assembly.

The pics show a very dry and corroded CV?
When I rebooted mine everything was nice and shiny.
I understand the angle and forces when it broke but it looks like it may have been well worn or flogged with low grease and contamination before it broke.

Yeah...I can't really figure it out. It wasn't leaking before Friday afternoon on the trail (can't tell you how many hours I've spent under this truck the past couple months!) and it spewed a fair amount of lube when the boot tore/band let go (can't tell which came first). I had to drive it about 20-miles or so I'd guess on dirt then another 150-200 highway miles with it open...doesn't really make sense in any case.

And like you when I've rebooted them they've been nice and shiny...once I cleaned all the goopy lube out!

Yep strange, looks like the corrosion/contamination has been there for a while, how long ago did you reboot?

Rebooted 2-1/2 years and 45,000 miles ago.

Hey Dan,
Have a really good look at the tear marks on the cage, are any of them old, that is, can you see if some of the tear/crack was here some time ago before it let go this time?
