Aaron - check out the Ouray thread I posted up today!!

Very cool. With a 7 month lead time you can count us in 👍

Counting you in ain't gonna be enough pard, you gotta call the CG and grab a spot. That CG will be overrun with this crew  Post up on the Ouray thread your site # and such. I'll update the running list on post #2.

That is no joke. It not only fills up fast with us, but other people too. That campground is way popular.

Looks like we got about 7 for sures and 3 or 4 maybes. Met VT , a friend with an 1996 80 series, at American Toyota today. I invited him. He said he would try to make it. will try to get him into this group.
Weather looks good for wheeling. Not too late to join in on all the fun.

Meet up at Walgreen's parking lot at 9:00 am. UNSER and NORTHERN. Gas and snacks , next door. We will drive Northern to edge of Puerco Valley overlook and meet anyone else out there. Will enter on a road in that area. HAM radio, regular channel. No radio, still join us.

Drive around for a while, then if finish early enough, we could drive somewhere for food and drink!!

Of course , time for you to get sandy, in 4 low, and see what you have been missing.
9:00 am Northern / Unser, Walgreen's parking lot. Begin food, water, full tank of gas, radio, if have one, good off road tires, and expect to have a good time.

I should be able to make this run! I'll let you know by Friday.

What's the HAM frequency you are transmitting on?

Also, I'll have my new CB hooked and tuned up nicely.

HDC#1 = 146.460
HDC#2 = 146.400

We have been using #2 lately.

When you joined me on the West Mesa ride, that was a NM4W ride, with HDC members also. I was using CB for the NM4W members, and HAM for HDC members.
I use both radios, but much prefer HAM, for its better range and clarity, and HAM has ability to use a magalink system that can cover the entire state.
NMHDRC is local HAM radio club that offers monthly HAM radio testing to get your HAM license. I downloaded a HAM test app to my smart phone, with all the questions, studied them in any free time I had , took the test, and got the entry level Tech license. Not hard if you spend a little time studying.
Contact NM High Desert Radio Club for more info.
NMHDC members carry a few hand held HAM radios, so you can monitor the radio conversation. With me on this ride to the Puerco, you can use your new CB to talk with me, if you want. If you are new to all this radio stuff, using the CB is good practice. When you ride on a NM4W ride, you will find they use CB's for the most part, although a fair amount of their members have HAM license's.
Radios are important in a group when they are traveling together in the back country. Anything is better than no radio, for safety. I have been in several big groups, and we have lost part of the group, and had to spend some time getting the "Herd of Cats" back together. PITA.
Hope that clarifies the communications issue.
Since you a just getting started in off roading, there is a lot to learn. Getting out with these groups, you will learn about how to drive in all kinds of situations, get into camping, modifications to your 4x4, and equipment that helps make this sport more fun. New Mexico and the other 4 corner states have 1000's of miles of dirt roads to explore. Ask questions and get to our monthly breakfast to meet up with everybody.
See you Sat.

We need to ban CBs in this club :flipoff2:

Okay with me. HAM's are the best. I would not even have a CB, anymore, except for me leading rides with NM4W. " When in Rome.........."

So where in town could I buy a handheld HAM radio?

Amazon probably the best way to go, Baofeng is the cheapest option or Yeasu is a better quality option. I haven't messed with any shops in town so not sure what they have...
