With my alpine i can see it with polarized sun glasses and watch it fade out if i tilt my head. Even a little tilt it really changes a lot. That generally isn't my issue as much as glare

Both of my sunglasses's polarization lines up with "something" on the Pioneer screen and it appears very dim to black. But if I tilt my head I can see a bright screen unless I'm dealing with glare from the passenger side.

This thread is making me want to go back to a single din simple head unit even more.

Same one I installed. You will like it. I used a USB 3.0 extension with audio jack(the round ones often used in boats) to extend to inside my center console.

Thanks everyone this thread is incredibly helpful; I just picked up an incredibly well kept 97 LX450 and I am looking to attack the same project soon. @jomichael I do like your install. Couple questions for the group related to this:
1. Any thoughts on replacing everything but the subwoofer and just leaving the OEM sub in there with the new head unit and door speakers? My cones are blown out on 3/4 door speakers but I think the sub is fine.
2. I can fix a lot of things but I do not trust myself with anything electrical after a prior debacle with an F150. I also do not trust most of the "experts" at car audio shops, and I think might be safer to let my local Land Cruiser repair guy install the stuff for me. If anyone has any suggestions on what to look for or pitfalls with knowing whether an audio installer knows what they are doing with an LC/LX, I am all ears.
In my LX450, I have replaced all four door speakers and the factory subwoofer with a Tang brand (from ebay in 2011) that sounds a lot better, but still doesn't make a ton of sound being only 4". Recently, I installed a 6" bazooka tube in the "wing" area of my drawer system.

The factory location of the head unit makes viewing a screen a real pain since it is far below your normal sight line and picks up glare. Instead, I installed a Wits End useless cubby insert with a ram mount that holds an 8" Android tablet. The tablet is attached to the factory stereo via a tape car kit. If you haven't used a cassette car kit before, you may think it would not work as well, but sound quality is equal to any Aux line in. The tapes wear out every few years, but only cost about $10.

I make a mobile hot spot with my phone and the tablet connects to it automatically. I usually listen to Pandora or Spotify and run Google maps as well as some other off road focused ones. The Android tablet can also control and monitor my fridge and Renogy solar charge controller.

The main drawback of the mounted tablet is that it cooks in the sun on hot days when the truck is parked. This causes it to stop charging and it shuts down apps until it cools down. When driving with the AC on, it recovers.

If my factory stereo dies, I would remove it and install a single din unit. I would then also no longer use the 4" sub or dash speakers, and would connect the tablet via aux or Bluetooth.

i have a sony xav-ax3000. i did try android auto briefly, but found i prefer using my phone itself to control nav, music, etc from a ram mount. and the mount puts the screen closer to my sight lines. but the larger headunit screen does display the full artist, album, and track info via bluetooth...which is nice. about to hook up a reverse camera, which will give that screen a real purpose.

during my trial period, i installed a USB 3.0 extension with the plug mounted to a switch blank. but can't maintain a solid connection via the extension. the sony manual does say to not use an extension. i've only tried my pixel phone, which could have worn out usb type-c plug on it, or maybe Sony is just smarter than i am.

There's a button you can press and hold that completely blacks out the screen v which is good at night.
Screen reactivates with a touch.
I use that a lot!!! Just silly they couldn’t dim it 50% more!!

Works with Maui Jim lenses. At least mine which are RX.

I tried a little Cardboard shade, 1” out from the top then tapered to 0 down the passenger side of the screen. sorta works in certain lighting….looks dumb. Was going to remake from some 3/16” kydex but not worth it.
