ANY shackles other than STOCK length will ruin OME springs???

I call BS on that one !

Well,

OME offers longer than stock length shackles for their leaf springs on the Land Cruiser, however, they are of the anti-inversion design to prevent the shackle from flipping up and binding the shackle and the spring against the frame.

Operating your Land Cruiser with the shackle folded against the frame will prevent the spring from flexing as it should and can cause damage to the leaf spring.

I think poser hit the nail on the head. given the OME rep the benefit of the doubt. this was what he was refering to.

using a too short shackle can damage any spring
other than that.... this is BS.

Mark...

in fact, OME springs on a '40 are too short for OEM length shackles... they really need to be a bit longer to prevent shackle inversion.

Moto,
FWIW, I have the 33x10.50 on the ome dakaar 2.5 springs. minor rub but not that big of a deal with an uncut tub. I don't think you will need the extra room.
Oh and I have the ome anti inversion shackles which as per my memory are 10 mm over stock length.

Dave

I called the rep on them selling a longer shackle question also, and, he told me they DONT OFFER any shackles longer than stock length, only anti inversion shackles. I understand too long of a shackle causing other issues but ruining a spring? I dont understand the method behind this. He was saying the length cased the issue.

Ok.

Who are you dealing with?

This is true for any spring, not just OME/DAKAR:

When the shackle collapses/inverts and allows the spring to be forced up against the frame, this will prevent it from flexing at the shackle, and if you were to continue to run your spring in this configuration,(ie.you do not notice it) it is very likely that it will bend the spring where the frame pin attaches the spring to the chassis when subjected to flexing loads. This will work-harden the spring steel at this location and could cause the spring to fracture.

Poser, I had the anti inversion conversation with him also, completely separate issue. It is a no brainer an inverted shackle could kill any spring. He said it was the LENGTH that ruins the spring, not becoming or being stuck inverted.:meh: oh well, I am calling BS.

I will call back tomorrow to find out who I was speaking with if it means that much to ya:eek: seemed to be a nice fella anyway. But he did also tell me it would not be safe to use the stock (old) u-bolts. most likely just trying to sell shackles and u-bolts with the springs. I think he thought I was a cruiser amature. its all good, just thought it was interesting.

Hi All:

Well, from my memory the OME 40/45 Series anti-inversion shackles are stock length in the front and about 5/8ths of an inch longer in the rear.

I highly doubt running an one inch longer than stock length shackle can hurt leaf springs.

FWIW, I've had a regular problem with the right-side front anti-inversion shackle inverting on off-camber spots. I've yet to figure out how to resolve this issue - not sure longer front shackles would be the right answer.

Regards,

Alan

This is what an OME sales rep just told me, is this true? I want to run 34x9.50's and thought a 1/2"-1" extra height might be helpfull.

You do whatever you want, but I will not re-use old ubolts...

I learned a hard expensive lesson running OME springs without anti-invert shackles (I bought my OME springs very early on when anti-invert OME shackles were not yet available), I bent 2 springs at the Rubithon :eek::eek:
