Anybody wanna go run a couple of trails this coming up Fri, Sat, or Sun (6/16-6/18)? Or sometime next week? I'm thinking of running "Blue Canyon" in the morning, and then "Strawberry" in the afternoon. Start on the Hwy 50 side and head towards Hyw 88 side.

I've been on "Blue Canyon" once last year, its a "moderate" trail. Connects up to "Strawberry." About 4 miles or so (I think), done in a couple of hours. A few obstacles or so, nothing too serious, but I guess things can change year to year.

"Strawberry" is also a "moderate" trail. Never been on it, but there are two major obstacles. Theres the V-rock, which needs spotting, and also the "waterfall." From recent pics on www.norcalttora.com, it seems that there is a bypass for the waterfall obstacle now.

Beretta,

There might be a lot of snow. With snow on the ground this trail is harder than it seems. If you go, don't do it alone.

Regards

Alvaro

Alvaro, for sure I won't be going alone. The pics are from 5/21, and it does show snow on the trail. But there doesn't seem to be any at the waterfall. No recent pics of the V rock. Hoping most of it will be gone by now. If not, I think I'll be okay, 10 psi, 4 low, 2nd gear, and vary the gas. Learned this on the last outing. Should be fun, well, as long as I don't take a tow strap from a hilux surf...

Vette60, I'm good to go as early as Friday, if nobody else wants to go.

Beretta,

You won't find snow at the waterfall nor at the V. The snow is past that. The snow level should be around 7.000. Have fun and take a lot of pictures.

Regards

Alvaro

I can't help it. Getting bored and restless. I'm heading out to Strawberry with my girlfriend. I read that there is a campsite on the trail. The plan is to get there and camp there for the night, then continue on to Hwy 88 and then head back towards Hwy 50 on Iron Mountain Road, and explore some of the fire roads there. Maybe run Plummer Ridge trail ("easy"), if I can find it. Strawberry is probably still snowed in, but whatever. Bringing enough food, water, supplies for a few days, and 10 gallons of extra gas. Should be back by 6/18 Monday night and I'll post up, if not, then this wasn't such a good idea, send search and rescue.

So, did you make it through?
What happened? How did you smash your tail light? It looks like you got some body damage as well. Plus those nerf bars are taking a beating.

Alvaro

No, didn't make it through. I actually got video of it. Problem is that my hard drive died, and I'm using a pulled part from an old computer. Got all of 1.5 Gigs of free space left for use after installing Windows, not enough to edit video with. I'll see if I can figure something out, and get the video up.

I think a spotter would have helped a lot. I was just blindly plowing that sucker up the hill. For sure I would've made it if I was triple locked though. Also, my tires were at 41 psi after highway travel. Decided to leave em like that for added clearance.

Nerf bars are mangled. Don't really care bout those though. Was hung up on those, and the sounds they made when they bent weren't pretty.

The taillight got smashed AFTER I had decided I had enough. Totally preventable. Backed off the hill too fast, and crunch. Hit the only tree that was there.

Was there a lot of snow?
How far did you go? Did you get to the waterfall? or the V shaped rock?
Which side did you go in from? Hwy 50 or 88?

Alvaro

Didn't see snow. But then I didn't go all that far. Went all of 2 miles from the trailhead. Started from the Hwy 50 side. I got to the Waterfall obstacle. Thats where I got denied. As I understand it, V rock is beyond that. Probably a good thing that I didn't get to V rock. That can really mess the body up without a spotter.

P.S. What I thought was Blue Canyon is actually Long Canyon. Pretty tame now, just a rough rocky ride. The one obstacle it had somebody filled it up with dirt.

Just uploaded a short video clip. The video quality got screwed up by youtube.

Carnage update:

Picked up a new taillight for $70. Dent is gonna stay put.

Went to muffler shop. Found out ALL of the exhaust mounts are broken. Tail pipe, muffler, and cats. Got quoted $75 to fix the stock mounts, plus add a couple more to strengthen it up.

Thats one strong OEM taillight lens to knock this tree off to the side!

How did the front pumpkin and axle look (it looks like you hit it pretty hard in the video - cant tell blurry though)?

Everything is overbuilt on Land Cruisers, including the taillight. The pumpkin and axle is fine. Hit 90 MPH on the way back, coming down a 7% grade of course. In the video I hit the control arms, and thats fine also. Atleast thats what I think its called. Its the long thing next to the pumkin. Although I'm sure I hit everything that can be hit. I went at it like that for about 15-20 minutes or so, minus the time I get out and look at whats underneath.

Anybody up for a trip this Saturday (11/04/06) ? I'm thinking Deer Valley, or whatever else close to that area. Already been on Barney Riley.
