I belong to a local club (Gettin off 4x4) here in the Bay Area. The club consists of about 30 of us with a good mix of 50/50 Toyotas and Jeeps. I fall into both catagories.

We had our monthly club meeting and usually have 1 to 2 runs a month. Here is are our next upcoming run you all are welcome to join us. If you want more details let me know.

May 20th Is our annual trail opening run. (SourGrass) then depending on time (and this year snow level) we usually run Slick Rock.

We have two runs set for June but depends on Snow level. They may be moved.

Sour Grass is the formal name of the Boards Crossing trail. I have been wheeling this are (and live there 50% of the time) for 15 years. My first experience was up at the Ramsey trail. Its closed now but when it was open it was fun.

Boards Crossing is an easy trail great for newbys or somebody who just wants to camp. I has one water crossing, but the camp site is awsome. Its also a great place to camp and meet people for later runs to slick rock and Deer Valley.

This past weekend I went snow wheeling right behind my house. The snow got deep and I ended up winching my way out. Lots of snow up their right now. I am wondering when we will be able to go through slick rock and deer valley.

I agree stay out of Greenhorn for a while. I went to play in mid February and nearly did drown. A moment of inattention and I had water in the cab up to my waist and had a drowned engine. Luckily it only cost me some minor engine parts and a new carpet.

On Barrett Lake, yes some say it is simlilar to Rubicon but I think it is a bit easier and it is much more serene. It is thought of as the quiet semi secret that not too many people know about. It is usually closed until late summer due to wet conditions at a meadow.

Paul, Sourgrass sounds familiar. We used to go to Dorrington when I was a kid; my mom's friend had a cabin we would stay at there. When I was about 5, we camped down near Board's Crossing down a trail a few miles off the beaten path. My dad drove our 65 LeMans convertible down there towing a trailer, and I think the car hit every rock on the trail. It was a cool place to camp. Maybe near Sourgrass?

Beretta, Knoxville is pretty cool. Last April, a few of us from PMC went up there to do a clean up day with a bunch of other 4WD clubs and the Napa Co. Sherrif's Dept. I spent the day tooling around there, and had fun. Tok th e.22 and did some shooting. Didn't know my way around at all, but found some cool byways. There was a house up there with an old 55 parked out in the field, didn't stop to look too close though. My buddy wants to go up and camp for a night; we may head up in late April or early May. If anyone is up for it, you are welcome to join us. I'll post up the details when we get something worked out.

Ive been in the Forest Hill area for about 1yr...Ive done alot of exploring and havent found anything that was to difficult. Ive done most of my exploring in the sugar pine area. Does anyone have any info on trails in this area or know how to access the Big Reservoir area or Mosquito ridge? Ive been solo most of the time and would be great to hook up with someone in the area....its a long walk back from the sticks if something goes wrong with my rig.....Thanks for any replies

Where is Forest Hill? It doesn't come upon my Garmin MapQuest, or Topo USA? Is it off of 88? I think I might have seen the sign on the way to my in-laws in Pioneer?

Forest Hill is off hwy 80 about 17 miles east of Auburn Ca. Try punching in Forest Hill Rd...the zip code is 95631....

Okay, found it! In my Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails book, it shows some trails around your area which is Area 3 in the book.

1. Bear Valley Loop- Moderate
2. Fordyce Creek- Diffucult
3. Signal Peak- Difficult
4. Shirttail Canyon- Easy (this one's right by your house it looks like)
5. Mt. Watson- Easy
6. Blackwood Cyn., Ellis Peak- Moderate
7. Hell Hole- Difficult
8. Rubicon, (do I need to describe it?!!)
9. Barrett Lake- Difficult

I haven't done any of these trails, but would love to when the snow is gone!!

Count me in a.

Sorry, can't go this Sunday, we will be in Vegas! Our first time! After the snow melts, I want to go on Pardoes and Deer Valley trails. The last time I was on them was back around 2000, in our Tacoma. I really would like to do them again in the 80 this time with fellow Cruiserheads!!

:D that's funny Tree! :D

Just a few comments...the TTORA links are pretty good. FWIW, the write up for Strawberry is a little old. The trail is much tougher now than it used to be -- specifically 1 section near the Hwy 50 end of the trail. The one obstacle is a 9 or 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I'd like to set up a Deer Valley Trail trip this summer...I think it would be a nice easy trip for the experienced wheelers and a good intro to some of the novices.

Doug,

One alternative to the Strawberry trail is to do it from Hwy 88 to Hwy 50. That way you reach that nasty obstacle going down. And it should be done later in the summer. Not with snow and runoff on the ground.

Tires tend to have better traction on dry surfaces.

Regards

Alvaro
