Does anyone know where I can have a bumper for my LX450 built? I saw a 62 on the TLC website and its exactly what I want. Designed by the owner, I figure with a Fab shop may be able to design a similar swingout after measuring my 80. How long does it normally take to fab a bumper like this and whats a ballpark estimate? Thanks guys

Hard to tell with pics but it looks like it sticks out really far. It might hit rocks, etc. Make sUre it fits bike racks trailer hitches etc.

You can check with ACC. They have made a few bumpers but they might also have a better idea of shops around that could make one for you.

Also, you might check out the 4x4labs 80 rear. Not just trying to sell you one since I have one, but the kit is a really good deal. I think I paid around $650 for just the bumper shell and then another $200 for all the swing out components, but I didn't buy the swing out that 4x4labs makes. If you get the double swing out with tire carrier and jerrycan holder (or ladder, etc.) its around $1000 as a kit or like $1500 welded up. Here are a few pictures of mine, but you can see more on his website http://www.4x4labs.com/products/rear-bumpers/

@pandathrust did you sell the bumper you had on the 80 before this one? Besides the TLC fab bumper above, im considering a Kaymar but i dont want to spend that much or deal with shipping. I like the 4x4labs bumper but id like something a bit more thick.
@pillguy it doesnt stick out to bad, this truck will be a dd and part time trail vehicle. I dont do any rock climbing so not to worried about rocks. Will accept a hitch, i just need something to carry a full size spare

I already sold the Iron Pig rear bumper. I liked it because it was made of all 1/4" steel, but moved to the 4x4labs because of the increased departure angle as it requires cutting about 3" off frame with the rear crossmember. I haven't had a chance to slam it into any rocks yet, but I'm pretty confident that the additional gusseting that I added to mine will make it pretty resistant to bending. Most 80 series bumpers out there will be 3/16" besides a few that are thinner and others that are thicker (IPOR and majority of the Kaymar). There are multiple stories of 80s with the slee rears as well as 4x4labs rears having crashes at 30-40mph and showing almost no damage. 1/4" thick bumpers will weigh a lot more while a well designed bumper made from 3/16" will do just as well. There are a lot of good options out there for bumpers it's all a matter of preference.

Thanks for the info panda, I will contact ACC later in the week to inquire about a bumper. Besides having the bumper to hold a spare, I wanted something to protect the rig against rear end collisions. Preciate it brotha

Swing out spare tire carriers are nice until you slide backwards into a tree . Then when the glass shatters and the lift / tail gate is bent cause the carrier took the big hit and bent . You'll look at the carnage and wish you had made room inside the rig . Just saying , cause I've been there and it happen .

That's exactly what I'm saying Ted , thank you for that mighty fine and technical demonstration .

Damn lol, that made a nice size dent in the tail gate. Thanks for sharing your experience guys.. So I'm guessing the swingout is a damage multiplier in some instances (never even thought about it). Does anyone make a spare mount for the cargo area for the 80 that allows for up to 315's? T

A swing out made from proper materials with a strong spindle and high quality latch will have a greatly decreased change bending/breaking. A strong main swing (2"x2" or 2"x3" with at least 3/16" wall) is what you need along with strong tube for the vertical hoop. These are all things that a bumper fabricator SHOULD take into consideration when making swing outs. There are tons of pictures of sh**ty swing outs made by people in their backyard breaking, including on MUD. Things like this shouldn't discourage you from getting one made. A swing out is not something that should be done "cheaply" as these pictures are what the result will be. If you hire a reputable fabricator to do the job, they will know what they are doing and will come up with something that is strong and exactly what you wanted.

Having a tire in the rear gets really annoying if you want to haul anything else around, especially if you want to go 37s. I did that for like 4 months. With that said, LandcruiserPhil makes an interior tire mount for an 80 that I think will hold a 35, but is pretty expensive for what it is. https://sites.google.com/site/landcruiserproducts/80-series-inside-tire-carriers

what are y'all talking about, that bumper worked perfectly... obviously, it was designed to crumple in on itself, then self destruct for a bit of comic relief. why else would it have been made up of materials of that caliber.

Oh to be young again . I will remind you of that statement when it happens to you . Just curious though , what kind of rear view do you have out the rear glass ? I challenge you to easy back on a tree against that spare tire . Then gently try to back up , watch what direction your tire carrier moves . Then imagine climbing a slippery rock , hill or what ever when you lose traction . The rig slides backward right into that tree you where trying so hard to avoid . I wonder what happened after that . So I guess my point is it really doesn't matter who builds the tire carrier Newtons Law is always going to apply . But it's not my rig .

You could check with Gordon Stiltner. Gordon is a former president of the GA Cruisers and his metal fabrication is exceptional. He used to do a lot of custom work, including front and rear bumpers.

Thanks for the lead @LDowney, I'm emailing him now. Thanks

Mine broke going over railroad tracks but it was s***ty anyways lol

I'm a fan of having the spare secured vertically inside the cargo area now.
