Just had my fj40 towed to garage to check this out. Water was leaking between my header and flange to muffler. All ideas welcomed.

Sounds like a head gasket or cracked head/block to me. At minimum, the head has to come off. Pull the spark plugs and see if any of the cylinders have coolant in them. That way you know where to look when the head is off. I'm assuming the coolant in the radiator is low? Was it blowing white smoke while driving? What's the status of your motor? Original, rebuilt, new, used, etc?

Was it water or antifreeze
if it was water condensation in exhaust dripping out
If it was antifreeze head gasket

blowing black smoke out exhaust. I checked my oil but the dipstick did not show signs of water. The 2f has 103,00 but has run strong till now.
The antifreeze was running out the flange pretty quick. I'm hoping it's the head gasket only.

Are you sure it's antifreeze black smoke is rich
Antifreeze is white smoke and has a sweet smell to it
And by leaking out flange are you talking flange to head
Or the flange from manifold header to exhaust system

Like Tin basher said, black smoke is typically the result of a rich fuel mixture. Which flange was it coming out of? Cylinder head to exhaust manifold, or exhaust maniold to exhaust pipe? Any pictures you can snap would be awesome, and check in those cylinders through the spark plug holes. If your pistons still seal well (I'm sure they do), I've seen coolant sit on top of a piston for days before draining in to the oil pan.

Please do not use the words water and antifreeze interchangeably.

Are you actually losing coolant in your radiator? Is the leak constant or just during startup. Folks have been fooled by condensation before.

You did the right thing. Towed it to a shop. They should be able to tell you what its leaking and where it is leaking from. The answer to your question is, call the shop and find out what is going on before you speculate on everything under the sun. All the "what if"s in the world aren't going to help you.

Just hope it's a honest shop and they know what a carb and points are and don't spend a day looking for the scan port
Unfortunately many of today's mechanics are parts replacers and lack basic diagnostic skills

The shop just called me and said the antifreeze is leaking from what they called a heat exchange under the carb and is running down the header and gives the impression it is dripping at the flange. They said there are two hoses that are connected to the heat exchange.

That makes sense, I called the garage and told them about the parts and where they could order it. Thanks so much, I feel a little better about the fix. You guy's have all the right answers, thanks for all the support from the members of ih8mud.

It's there to help warm the fuel and air on our NE trucks that have had headers swapped in. Good Luck.
