1977 is running about 177° (infra red gun) at the freeze plugs when warmed up and idling but the temp gauge slowly moved all the way right as it warmed up. I think the gauge may be from a '79 (the amp meter is). Is the sender from a '79 different than a '77?
thanks

Comparing the 77 and the 80 chassis manuals you can see that yes there is a difference.

Pull the sender, clip your meter onto it, and drop it in water which is at a rolling boil ( you know its at 100c).

Measure the resistance and you'll see if it's working.

Also with buying a few fixed resistors on ebay so you can test a few points on your gauge.
