Holly #@%$! That is un-frickin-believable.
Tell your painter I'm extremely impressed with his flame job.
What a surprise; I don't think anyone will outdo you on this one.

Joe is here right now. I couldn't wait till it was done. And neither could he. We had to see what you would say, And he said I guess he likes it. HAHA Thanks for the kind words and I really hope that is what you were looking for. How do the guy's at the house like it?

iaintscared;

How do you source the Vortec engines? Do you shop scrap yards until one turns up? Or do you have a guy who deals in 'em from wrecks?

Man, I like the thought of dumping my tractor motor & slushbox in favor of a Vortec & a 5 speed.

I have 2 local yards that call me when they get a good one come in so I can go and check them. I can see how they look and check compression etc. Before I even pick them up. That's what you call customer care:grinpimp:

I'm on duty tomorrow, so I'll let them check it then. But I'm sure they will be shocked. I'll try to attach a shot of our house.

I hate you Randy........

My son would really appreciate that. I know he sure would like to ride in the trucks. Maybe take the chief for a ride after you get the beast back:grinpimp:

And Mr Zero....I knew I would be in trouble:cool: I would be glad to hook your cover up...Lightning bolts or flames?

I was wondering what Mr. Zero would think about the flames. His engine cover is very nice, and was actually one of the things I really liked about his finished project. But, I understand how he might have flame-envy.

Maybe I could do some skulls on it?! I know that flamin envy is a killer!! I thought it fit your truck though since you do an awesome service for the public. It is the least I could do for you.

Good point`

I will be started on that next. The harness that I use is provided by FIS out of San Antonio. I let Jeff and the gang make my harness and reprogram the ECU. You can rework your original harness but you have a jumble of wires to deal with after you connect your tie in leads. Downey has a conversion guide that details the essential wire connections. Of which I believe there are only 4 0r 5 wires that need to be connected. It is a very good source of info when you do these swaps. But I preffer to call THE MAN, JIM when in doubt. But if you want a clean install and a custom fit harness I use FIS. The main thing is to decide what components of the original donor vehicle you will use. Ca. trucks don't have a choice it has to be 100% as stock. Here in Tx. we can do away with small items like Exhaust manifolds, Purge, rear 02 sensors,Etc. The ECU is the heart of the engine. If you do not have it programmed correctly the engine will not perform. A common mistake is the MAF sensor, tire size,VSS adapter. If you use the wrong sensor or it was programmed wrong it will not run. Also if you run the 4L60E or 5speed tranny you need the VSS adapter (40 pulse). If this is not present or is not properly adjusted the engine will load up and miss shifts or just sit there and idle till it floods. If you are not a genuis with tranny work, send it out for the output shaft install. The electrical tie in on the original harness is very simple. If you labeled the connections during teardown you are half way there. All the harness needs is... 12V constant, 12V ign, Alt, Fan, A/C, Fuel pump, and lockup for the auto tranny. There really isn't alot to it when you look at it this way. The hard part is getting all to fit in a nice little package. I will be installing the harness tonight before I set the engine due to the ECU location. So I will have some good pic's of the harness and the connections you need.

BTW... I have been looking into the Advanced Fuel Managment system and should have an idea on how to get one of the newer systems in the truck if anyone out there has thought about doing one.:grinpimp:

Also you will need a code reader to talk to your truck when the install is done. I have a Genysis but you don't need to go to that extreme.

That would be an excellent topic to cover on engine swaps !!
Hey Randy... I think if I ever do a swap again I'll send yah the rig:D:D

This guy is amazing. How does he keep track of all this stuff?

Great Thread

This is beautiful work! I'm very interested in getting more cost information from you Iaintscared. I believe you said something about a general cost sheet you had? How many projects do you have lined up etc. I look forward to watching the completion of this latest creation, really nice work buddy.

Jason
