On Wednesday I saw that that Pull-n-Pay had just added a '89 FJ62 to inventory. With hopes of snagging the 3FE for my 40, I went to take a look. To my horror the engine had been given a "lethal injection" of sodium silicate. I guess someone had traded it in as a cash for clunker at American...Very sad.

I know one can swap the 3FE head to a F/2F block, but I am assuming the head is toast. The intake, fuel system, ignition system, wiring harness and ECU look good. Does anyone know if the 3FE intake will bolt up to a F/2F head?

I heard someplace the head might be OK, it's the rotation assembly that get fubared. Not sure though.

No, the 3FE bits will not work on the 2F head. There was some discussion on this awhile back where Jim C. and Mark W. chimed in. There are some tear-drop cuts into the top of the intake chambers to allow for the injectors. I think there might have been other reasons too.

Looks like I need to go shopping.

If anyone is going out to get parts, today would they mind grabbing the birfields for me. Otherwise I will be out there tomorrow, but those sometimes go quick. Thanks.

Never mind. It sounds like the stuff takes out bearings. The rocker assembly might be effected.

Oh yeah the head is likey fried. That stuff goes anywhere oil goes and jacks $hit up!

btw - The front axel was untouched

Awesome that is like I what to hear. I am going to try to be out there by ten tomorrow morning if anyone wants to meet me. I would be there sooner, but I have stuff earlier in the morning.

Does anyone need anything?

That FJ62 is from American Toyota. I saw it die....

:(

That's OK. Some of its bits will go to a good home and a good cause. It will live on.

They killed a beautiful FJ60 as well....I'm still trying to figure who got it. I might buy it for a project depending on how much the recycler wants for it. These guys are literally paying $125 at the Mannheim auction for entire vehicles.

The negative aspect is that the Feds are keeping a database of the VINs of destroyed vehicles so they cannot be "revived"...

I'm going to try and get off work early tomorrow to do some harvesting. I might pull off the rocker arm cover and see what it looks like underneath.

capital up her in sfe has 2 60s and a 62 also. The 62 was george's neighbor's rig, traded as c4c. I also thought about all the EFI, but not sure how much damage was done. The 62 up here is pretty much totally complete. Sorry, I won't be able to go back for a couple weeks, so if you need anything you are on your own.

See Isaac. I told you you better get there before Jon heard about it or there wouldn't be anything left. Unfortunately, what you wanted was the part that got destroyed from the Clunkers program. When they add the the Sodium Silicate, I'm assuming it's added to the crankcase. So I'd expect the EFI system to still be useable.

Correct--into the crankcase.

It's a reasonably destructive procedure. It was tough watching the cruisers die. The FJ62 lasted all of 4 minutes before she died.

It is tradition to refer to ships in the feminine, even if they are named after men. We seem to have carried that over to our automobiles as well. Even though we drive tough four wheel drives, we still refer to them as "she." I did a quick Google for why ships are addressed in the feminine, and came up with these short reasons why. There were longer more philosophical explanations, but I thought these were good. Some work for our trucks, too. I especially like 5, 7, and 8.

  1. There is always a great deal of bustle around her.
  2. There is usually a gang of men about her.
  3. She has waist and stays.
  4. It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good.
  5. It is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is her upkeep.
  6. She can be all decked out.
  7. It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly.
  8. Without a man at the helm, she is uncontrollable.
  9. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom.
  10. When coming into port, she always heads for the buoys.

That's a great list, Jon. Sounds like some sailors had input on that.

The sodium silicate made quick work of most of our CFC vehicles. One old Ford truck ran at 3K for several minutes, then about the time it died, it also overheated and blew coolant all over, quite spectacular. Most of them just quit after about 30 seconds, never to turn over again.

Anybody up for snagging the spare tire carrier + winch & I'll pay ya for your time? Gotta be cheaper than shipping a Mudbay'd one, and I'm gathering up parts for my base camp trailer project.

Follow up on the corpse.

The interior is gone. Just about all of it ... seats, carpet, side panels, door panels, glove box, etc. Rear seat belts were still there, brown interior. WTF. You 60 boys might grab those. Speaking of grabbing, the grab handle was still there.

Engine was almost 100%. There were a few odd ball things missing. More missing now. :grinpimp:

ECU was gone. [drat]

Free wheel hubs were gone, but knuckles/hubs and everything inside was there. Rotors were beat up.

Sheet metal damage on the drivers side rear door. Tailgate looked good. Tail lights gone. All glass looked good.

On the engine front. I attempted to pull the dizzy. I've had them be stubborn before, but this thing was not coming out. All I could think of is the cam gear was messed up from the execution. I might try again later. I pulled the rocker arm cover off the head. I then loosened one of the rocker arms and to my surprise it move freely on the shaft, at least up and down. Left to right it was stubborn. I think the head might be OK.

For those who care, I pulled the coil/ignitor, AFM, 4WD vacuum switches, fuel regulator VSV (leaving the rest), the two EFI relays, and a few other little bits.

I was there early today and it was the same story. The inside was gutted. Also the power steering box was gone. I couldn't get one of the snap-rings off to get to the birfields, so I am going back tomorrow morning with the proper tool.

Jon or anyone else we will be there at eight right when they open to pull those.

I also figured out I knew the owner of the 62. He was a teacher at my high school. Small world.

Do you want the chain one that hangs from underneath the cargo area? If it is still there tomorrow I will try to grab it for you.
