I couldn't handle it anymore.... I broke down. May the Lord forgive me.

Get it back together?

Back together, No. But system is flushed. Radiator, coolant reservoir cleaned, block flushed and few hoses replaced, (still more do). Since it's not my DD I'm not in a race like it seems like a lot of people are to get it back together. I actually just ordered the PHH from phhkits so as soon as it arrives I'll take on installation.

Mine didn't look that bad for a rig with just under 200k on the odometer. No cracking visible but its better to be safe than sorry. Now I won't be sweating buckshot when me and the family are miles from nowhere.

Hardest part of the job was getting the clamp against the block spun around to get mini-needle nose vise grips on it. I cut the cotter pin with the dremel as many have recommended in the 80s FAQs. I was finally able to spin it using a narrow, long, flathead screwdriver after I started cutting the hose lengthwise.

As far as the windshield leaks are concerned buy a new seal and pay the $100 to have it properly resealed and make sure to get a guarantee from the installer. I made 3 trips because they didn't use sealant the first time around. The second time they stripped the funky nut that holds the wiper arm on and I lost my wiper and promptly returned and made them find me a new one and refund my whole damn install.

Well, that hose still looks like the a-hole everyone posts about. I've looked at mine, and I'm in the same boat, 185k and no cracks, leaks or signs of problems. But being proactive with the eye doesn't guarantee it'll hold together. I'm going to do mine once my leg is better, and likely do all the coolant hoses under the hood. Looked at the silicon upgrade kits, and for the price (which you get all the needed hoses and new hose clamps) its hard to justify buying all the hoses piece by piece and changing them. I'm for sure going to run the silicon phh, I'm right there with you of sweating bullets when out in the middle of nowhere. I'm going to do a bit more research on the full silicon kits, but I'm leaning that way. I want to look at longevity as well.

Well, got it put back together, all good so far.

Coolant flushed as per 80tech FAQs, green coolant from previous owner and Toyota red were def mixed. Flushed from petcock, and block. Coolant reservoir flushed as well. Only residue in the entire draining of fluids was in the res. See pic.

I will say that putting the replacement PHH hose on the block nipple was definitely the way to go. If you put it on the metal tube first you can't' see the block nipple to get it on! Learn something new everyday. As others have said, I used KY (actually WET but same deal) to lube new PHH.

And @Phildoh , I agree with the silicon kit for sure. I may, (call me crazy) actually swap out PHH at the next coolant flush next summer when the weather is nice. My new garage will be finished and I'll have room to work. And also bc I used regular hose clamps (which I don't necessarily trust) after an OEM hose clamp debacle. In addition, I may actually keep most of the hoses and keep them in the trail kit for me, or someone else, or replace as needed as current hoses look absolutely fine.

Things learned.

1. OEM hose clamps are a pain in the ass. I will try to avoid them at all costs unless I have room to work, which you don't have when working on the PHH.

2. If I ever have a PHH issue I might try the bypass (protecting the hose of course with a sheath of some sort)

3. I need to just take my time. I generally get most frustrated during what I perceive should be the "easy part" (putting on the hose clamps which easily took me the most amount of time. Maybe the silicone hose is easier??)

4. I need to degrease from down under. Found an oil leak, not sure where it's coming from. Oil cooler line? Here's what it looks like, it's appears to be just left of the oil filter if looking up from down below. I don't think I'll know until I degrease.

Oil (i think) on pipe to the left of oil filter.

Residue from mixing red and green coolant. Thank PO.

I believe the next project will finally be fun..... lift time!!! (although I still need to drain transfer case, not so exciting)

Nice rig and good job. We are pretty much in the same boat. I have a 97 with similar issues and " needs" lol. What was you P401 fix? I'm also in CO but on the other side of the rocks. Maybe we can meet up on the trails come spring

As per Amory@Slee recommendation the P401 was fixed with a new OEM gas cap! He told me to start there and see if it fixed it. Low and behold, 300 miles later no code.

I'll def be hitting up Marble/Crystal Mill area in spring/summer I'll definitely keep you posted if your out in that direction.

Let's see....after the new starer install last week the wife said air was cold.... I looked at factory temp gauge and it hadn't moved from bottom after a twenty minute drive, I never notice that crap.

So I installed non-OEM thermostat that I had as a spare (don't judge, I ordered a OEM one and o-ring, and will install upon arrival) Heat is now raging and wife is happy.... For now.

Also ordered all 4 new center caps for wheels (PO said they were stolen), along with rear hatch sombrero, and new bulbs for dash. Oh, and 2 front OME front shocks as the start to my lift (Piecing it together).

Finally another Black LX! I'm in PHX surrounded by an army of White Rhinos!

My Cruiser is all grown up.

Would have been better had I been on a trail in the backcountry. But alas, I was just headed home from work. On the plus side at least I spent the night in the Cruiser.

Fender removal complete. Lift kit purchased and will be installed on Thursday barring any issues.

Certainly this is OEM....... pulled it off the drivers side mud flap (now deleted)

This is what it looked like what I pulled the fender flare.... looks like globbed on adhesive or something.. Not quite sure but I'll be taking the drill and the adhesive removal to it tomorrow. It seems harder than the fender flare gasket so I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Still interested in rear flares if they're not already accounted for. Funny thing is, iv'e been driving without rear flares for awhile and the look is starting to grow on me. Can't wait to see it with a lift and flareless!

Cheers,
Salue
