Thanks! The irony is that I generally don't like black vehicles either, I just happened to get a great deal on it.

Get it back together?
Back together, No. But system is flushed. Radiator, coolant reservoir cleaned, block flushed and few hoses replaced, (still more do). Since it's not my DD I'm not in a race like it seems like a lot of people are to get it back together. I actually just ordered the PHH from phhkits so as soon as it arrives I'll take on installation.
Mine didn't look that bad for a rig with just under 200k on the odometer. No cracking visible but its better to be safe than sorry. Now I won't be sweating buckshot when me and the family are miles from nowhere.
Hardest part of the job was getting the clamp against the block spun around to get mini-needle nose vise grips on it. I cut the cotter pin with the dremel as many have recommended in the 80s FAQs. I was finally able to spin it using a narrow, long, flathead screwdriver after I started cutting the hose lengthwise.

Well, that hose still looks like the a-hole everyone posts about. I've looked at mine, and I'm in the same boat, 185k and no cracks, leaks or signs of problems. But being proactive with the eye doesn't guarantee it'll hold together. I'm going to do mine once my leg is better, and likely do all the coolant hoses under the hood. Looked at the silicon upgrade kits, and for the price (which you get all the needed hoses and new hose clamps) its hard to justify buying all the hoses piece by piece and changing them. I'm for sure going to run the silicon phh, I'm right there with you of sweating bullets when out in the middle of nowhere. I'm going to do a bit more research on the full silicon kits, but I'm leaning that way. I want to look at longevity as well.
Nice rig and good job. We are pretty much in the same boat. I have a 97 with similar issues and " needs" lol. What was you P401 fix? I'm also in CO but on the other side of the rocks. Maybe we can meet up on the trails come spring
