Another 4X4Labs rear bumper

Very nice. I am considering going this route for the rear bumper myself. What is the minimum power requirements for the welder to tackle this kind of job?

Well most of this is 3/16", so anything that can handle that. I have a Millermatic 211, plugged into a dedicated 220 outlet. I have heard of many using a much smaller welder with good results.

This is actually my first attempt at any serious welding. All I have done before this is mending small things around the house.

I like the engine hoist idea. I balanced mine on a floor jack a couple times.

Missing bearing, eh? I didn't get any of the internal parts for the spindles, and I picked mine up at Luke's shop. That reminds me I need to email him again.

Was able to get some minor progress done without the lower spindle bearings. Not much measuring actually needed fro these parts. If you can find the center of the "C" brace and the upright square tubing these things pretty much build themselves. Got the spare tire carrier and most of the fuel can carrier tacked together.

And the can carrier

Anyone have any tips/hints on the ladder?

It's progressing slower than I intended.

Ran out of CO2/Argon, The wind picked up pretty good here, and I went to the drag races.

Here is where I am now. Mostly done except for fully welding the spindles in, figuring out the high-lift jack mount, and paint.

That hub cap is vintage FJ25. I picked it up for $1 at the swapmeet at the drag race. I plan on cleaning it up more. I am waiting on spring clips for the wheel as well to tie that detail up. I also need to come up with a mount for the reproduction oval Toyota emblem you see over the tag mount. I wanted to bring in a bit of Land Cruiser heritage with these details.

Did you cut the side plates where the tubing curves down or is that an option deal?

The tube was longer, so I did it like LandCruiserPhil's. I wasn't sure if it was going to work with the dual-swingouts, but it does.

Wait.. on your jerry can holder either I'm missing ANOTHER part or yours is a different design. I do not have that vertical arm and was going to do it so that it is lower on the ladder. I kind of like the idea of it being lower, the top of the basket would be roughly even with the bottom of the rear window.

I wish fuel can carrier was a bit lower in hindsite. Being only 5'1" tall, putting a full 5 gallon jerry can up there may prove to be "fun".

I gave thought to cutting the box tubing down and notching it to fit the horizontal brace, so it would be just above the step/mount. I decided against it obviously. I didn't want to re-engineer something and not have it strong enough. Figuring the weight of the fixture, the 10 gallons of fuel it's the last thing I want failing on the highway. But with some time and thought I bet it could be done with the parts supplied safely.

Such a cool bumper.

oops, wrong thread
