A friend of mine bought this a few days ago without even having looked at it in person, and of course it was dark the night we went to pick it up so it was hard to see the details.... until this morning.

So uh... who wants to try to identify this motor?

Howdy! If it ain't an old Chevy, then it' probably a Ford. John

That is a Chev. Measure the height of the side covers. If they are about 6" high it is a 292. If they are about 4" high it will be the 250 or smaller. Either size motor it has 7main bearings. They have the same posibilities for increased HP/torque as the F/2F. Bore slightly, shave the head a bit, change to a different (rv?) cam, etc and enjoy. BTW that carb does not look like stock for a 292. I'm interested in what you find out. I have a 292 setting here to rebuild and put in my 40 if I can't find a deisel I can afford.

Chevy with an autolite 2100 carb. Good carb for off road.

Howdy! Isn't the Autolite probably from a Ford? I'd guess from the low profile on the valve cover that it is a 250. The 292 is a heack of a Strocker. Used to call it "the Dump Truck 6". John

I am not a Chev guru, but, I am thinking it is a 292. I have two Chev motors setting here, a 292 and, according to block casting numbers, a 194. Both valve covers look identical in size, just differences in oil fill cap location and PCV tube location. The vertical height of the head between the side cover and the valve cover is about 3 1/4" on both motors. Look at pic #3 at the side cover size. It looks huge compared to the height of the head. I am guessing that the motor is a 292, in my opinion a great score. I am still curious though to find out what it is.

edit: bore 3.875--stroke 4.120 in the 292, the 250 bore is 3.875--stroke 3.530, the 194 bore is 3.563--stroke 3.250

I've been spending a bit of time looking at my copy of "Chevrolet Inline Six Cylinder Power Manual" by Leo Santucci (good read for anybody rebuilding either a Chev or Toyota I-6). Looking at pic #3,is that a fuel pump peeking out from behind the battery? Sure looks like it, if so the motor has to be a 292. On the 292 pass side of the block the oil filter base is up front just behind the timing gear cover. The pass side motor mount is next. Then the fuel pump is in the center of the block directly under the split between the two side cover plates. The 250 and smaller blocks have the oil filter base, then the fuel pump, then the motor mount just in front of the split between the side plates.

What tranny is this motor bolted to? SM465? Both my motors are bolted to the SM465. The bell housing bolt pattern for these I-6 motors is the same as the SBC so any tranny that fits SBC should be a bolt on. The motor mount location will be different between the 292 and SBC. Not sure about differences between SBC and the 250 and smaller I-6's.

Looks like a Chevy to me

Yes it is the 292... from what I tell.
The casting number on the lower right passenger side of the block is 3994258, which from what google will tell me is the 292.
I don't know anything about the motor, and we're not even sure it runs yet. We're going to soak the cylinders in ATF for a day and try to fire it up next week.
The entire fuel system is shot so Phil (thats who bought it) needs to pick up a pump and some misc stuff. The fuel tank needs to be cleaned as well, but it doesn't appear to leak.
He's got a million other pics and will probably start his own thread shortly.

Russ, tell Phil to just stick with that motor for now (since it's an upgrade already) and just work on the other stuff for now. That way we can all get to Moab for a spring trip! Remember, you still have your own rig to get ready...

so... the only thing keeping the engine from running is the fact that the choke linkage is broken.
i've already looked at a rebuild kit, but it doesn't include this one little piece.
any ideas on where something like this can be obtained?
