I just wanted to ask if I may be of some service to you. See, I work for a local Civil Engineering Firm. One of the things we do is Land Survey. We have a good program available called 'TOPO!' and it has the entire state of Arizona. I can get color maps, jpgs or convert runs to PDF's - either by GPS coordinate or just by navigating to the area - with the ability to actually line the forest roads out for those of us with or without a GPS unit. Would this be of help to CSC at all? Just thought I would drop a note to let you know my resources are available to you. Perhaps a member has the same available program, but I thought I would at least ask!

It may be just as good or better than a 'Backroads' type 4x4 guide, but not everyone owns a guide or a GPS (such as myself).

Let me know if your interested. If you like, give me some information and I could show a example of what I have access to!

Consider it a gesture of friendship!

John

I love topo maps! Played the navigator for years before I could get my own 40.

A few years ago, was on a trail and noticed an 'abondoned' road ..just dotted lines on the map..

Decided to look into it. We found the trees there were different hieghts on this particuliar spot.
Started mowin' em over as we went and followed along the tree line, watching the difference all the
while. We couldn't even see where we were going.. 6-8' alders mowin in front of us.
It only lasted about 100 yards and then wham.. opened up to this fantastic knoll overlooking the valley!
Became a great camping spot.

Ahh, fond memories ;)

Yes - it's quite fun to find those 'roads less traveled'!!

I recall doing this once for a run a while back - for either yotatech.com or pavementsucks.com.

I will post up the run I detailed for an example tomorrow.

The nicest thing about this program, it gives you the FR ## for each road. Almost exactly what the BLM or ASLD has.

John

Good deal, do you have access to anything in Utah?

One caution, be careful what you publish in any open forum. Any trails that are published in any of the books are fair game to publish, but any that aren't it better not to post too much info in a Google searched area. Most trails are seeing loads of traffic and I don't see the upside to directing more traffic to the less known ones?

Unfortunately, with the way mapping technology is heading, I think alot of these lesser known trails are eventually going to be published. I sure would love to have a copy of all the trails in Arizona though.

Looking foward to your example John, and BTW, welcome aboard.

I wouldn't be encouraging people to take roads that were not roads or to make their own path. I am just speaking about things like Red Creek, Bull Dog Canyon & Butcher Jones (to name a few I have already mapped.)

I look at this more like a resource to utilize than a map to disregard TREAD LIGHTLY!.

Samples soon to come!

John

P.S - I will see if we have anything on Utah!

Some examples - Plus GPS waypoints!

Here are some samples I did last year for some runs:

BULL DOG CANYON:

RED CREEK TRAIL via Seven Spring Road:

I can get more detail, such as the Bull Dog run - or an over view such as the Red Creek run. Also, here are the GPS waypoints I have for Red Creek direct from the program. So, I can in theory enter in waypoints for a run or export the waypoints once a run is selected:

TOPO! GPS Data Format UTM NAD83 ElevFeet UTC-Time
RCHEAD,12S,428084,3777646,2767,05/29/2007,19:33:53,

WP1,12S,422865,3745874,3280,05/30/2007,16:22:25,

Let me know what you guys think. If you want to - say, give me a run - I can see what I can do!

One more!

Here is Red Creek Run - in Detail:

Enjoy!

Very cool resources.

By the way, how much does Jeep pay to have their name on those trails? They are serious about diversifying their advertising schemes.

Just giving you a hard time. Welcome to the madness.

LOL - yes, if you notice on the Red Creek detail there's a Landing Strip near the right side, end of the run. That must be for the air lift 'Jeep Recovery Team' !! LMAO.....

BTW - when was the last time CSC ran Red Creek? I haven't yet, missed that run in 2007. Would it be an option for future run?

Howdy! When I was in Wyoming, I used to copy FS maps onto clear mylar and scale them to overlay topos. I also had access to copies of the original hand drawn mining claim maps from the late 1800's and early 1900's. I had a blast re-discovering a lot of old places. Many were just tattoos on the landscape from the foundations, but some were still "under roof" structures that were just amazing. John

Topo maps are awesome, I would like to have one for AZ, or Tonto and Coconino NF's it would be nice to get them in grid form and multiples so that the map isn't bigger than my truck? :D

I would like a map of AZ thats about 7' tall by 5' wide to put on an empty wall i have at home..... I will sharpie in the trails I have done.....

I used to go onto topozone.com til they forwarded you to a pay site and can't look at maps for free anymore.

Thanks

If we didn't get charged by our printer so much - I possibly could get you a 7' x 5'!! LOL

This TOPO! is here as long as it's available to me and the economy keeps me employed!

John

I would love to have a large map of az to put on my wall. Great idea about marking trails like that. I would be glad to pay for the large print if there is a way to get the file in a format that a large printer could do. I don't want to create too much work for you , but if thats possible, that would be awesome
thanks
Don

Yes...I could possible get some of these made up on vinyl 5x7 of AZ for people if I could get a good file in color. I would have to find out how many would be interested and check on prices, I have a hook up as far as large format printing.

IN, if reasonably priced of course.

I am willing to be the source if you can get them out to the printer!

The formats I can do are TIFF, 3 levels of JPG (GOOD, BETTER, BEST), BMP - there are like three others, but I can't recall them. IMHO - JPG or TIFF would be best. I would need to get with you clark and either do specific runs or a set 1/4 of the state. Kinda like a 1/4 at a time to make one huge one.

John

Tiff or hi res Jpeg would be fine I think. I would think the whole state would be best.
