Mine is toast - what options are you guys seeing and recommend?

Take it apart and replace the brushes. That is most likely the only problem.

hmmm, great plan, the worst that could happen would be I still have a nonfunctioning alternator - thanks!

There is a co in town that rebuilds alts and starters. The sold me the parts I needed for cheep. The brushes only cost around $5.
