This is distressing, disturbing, disappointing. I thought the drive train on these babies was supposed to be pretty tough.
It seems clear to me that it's a clear warranty issue. Probably-as K9 sez-should be a recall.
My FJ was minted in the spring of 06, so if the early ones have the suspect ring gear I'm certainly tainted. So my question is: If (when) mine explodes can I drop the rear shaft and get home on FWD? I have the M6 i.e. AWD. Or if I take out the ring gear then will it drive? I'm not clear on what happened in the Home Depot parking lot. Was that to locate the damage or to get the trucks to a drivable condition?

PS Some of you may recall that my T-case locked in 4WD low shortly after I got Bonnie, and this happened at the end of my first trail ride. It came out then (with Jason kicking it sideways while I tugged on the short stick) but the next time I engaged it the thing stuck for good.
Mr T gave me a new T-case on that one.

We removed the ring gear in order to make them driveable. They were making LOUD mechanical noises (BANG BANG BANG) until we removed the ring gear and the bits of teeth.

Great news! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!

That's great news.

Good thing Home Depot was still open to buy those new shiny jack stands!! Were you able to return them after use.
