On my new FJ40, the PO put the all-pro highsteer kit on with the heim ends...I've seen a lot of people not like those and some disclaimer on their site, should I worry about these on a 80% DD vehicle? or switch to tie rod ends?

Tie rod ends would be your safest option.

I seriously prefer TRE's over heim joints..

The heim joints I had always loosened up..

Guess I'll just run these til they loosen then get tie rods ends to fit...I hope ALL Pro uses the same size so you can switch from heims/TRE's...

thanks guys...

Plus they make more noise than a busted chainsaw.

I'm running heims on My DD at the tie rod only and will probably switch to TREs

my 60 hi-steer has the all-pro set up. it uses 80 drag links and TRES
i'd check with all-pro to see you might have.

according to All Pro, I'd have to change everything...arms and all... so that takes a nice high steer setup that I didn't have to buy...and either deal with the Heims or replace it all...

As I recall, the GM 1 ton taper starts with a 5/8" hole or so..

Correct, if you use the correct ends. Some of them have the same taper, but a smaller initial diameter.

I prefer the 3/4 ton Dodge ends, as the ends themselves match left to right, have the larger initial diameter, and are the same taper as all the common chevy stuff. They also share the typical 7/8 - 18 shank thread pitch with the Chevy stuff.

I bought a pair to use on my 80-series axle, but then changed directions and used FJ80 stuff on a mini-truck axle. I'm not trying to pimp my stuff, but if you're interested let me know. I paid $40 a piece from NAPA, would let them go for $60 for the pair. Then you would just need draglink ends.

Interesting...so i should be able to switch over to GM ends...provided the size/taper is correct...

Guess I'll have to see what size those heims are...

ben, i used GM 1-tons on mine and they worked good, had a local guy in the springs thread the DOM and Ream out the holes!

the only issue you have, is that the holes are too close together to put 2 1 tons on the passenger side arm, you can see in the photo that the drag link connects into the tie rod via a reamed out hole in the passenger side TRE

Did your Previous owner upgrade to the mini truck knuckles?

trevor,

yea, he did the whole mini-swap and hi-steer at the same time. Switched to mini knuckles/hubs.

I'll have to get more info when it shows up...then make the decision to doge/gm 1 tons...

Ben- when you get to the point of needing 1-ton ends, look up this site-

www.partsmike.com

Mike was very helpful to me, his prices beat my local autozone and his parts were better. There is also a helpful chart on his site that sorts out all the different large GM TRE's.

good info on this thread and i really only have one small remark to add to it:

make sure you use plenty of oil and go nice and slow if you end up reaming them. also, it's important to put the reamer in a drill press and GO SLOW!! you won't have enough control with a power drill and will ruin the reamer.

carry on.:)
