Cheers guys! And thanks heaps for the help and advice you gave me - it was invaluable.

Loved driving it last night after taking possession. Only a short drive but she really is easy to drive, the gear box is sweet and overall performance is very good.

Impressions:

Being a night drive I found the interior instrument light very dim (didn't really bother me but it may also be because one or another of the lamps is out?); the spotties seem to be a little unreliable as to when they come on and stay on in the Switch Down and High Beam Position but I would need someone to check that with me.

The interior condition is really quite amazing - all the trim, mirrors, dash, instruments, seats work are clean and work well.

I am considering moving the front seat back about 4 inches but in the mean time I got used to the pedals and lack of leg room very quickly. Its not so much the leg room itself so much as the position of the brake and clutch relative to the accelerator.

There is some kind of belt noise when the air con is on - not sure really because I turned the air con off and drove with the windows down :)

The ride comfort is fine and she handles really well, steering is light and positive.

All the windows and locks work (the passenger window doesn't seem to want to go all the way down so I didn't force it) except the rear door lock - it can be locked when closing (from the inside) and the door is then locked but the key does not open it - it needs to be unlocked from the inside.

The radio works (has an "autoreverse cassette" top of the range you know  which I am not sure works) and I think only one speaker works - but that is easy.

BTW the Idler (?) had to be adjusted - that can at the front under the bullbar for steering (what is that for?)

The window spray motor and bottle had to be replaced (done!)

So it really does look like everything works just fine.

AND...

The owner (who I only met last night) had the original owners manuals - I will scan them into colour PDF and get them up sooner or later...

Including a handbook on wheeling with some priceless pictures.

And best of all - the original KeyRing - something to be seen - the leather tab with the Toyota emblem in metal attached.

I'm gonna give her a good clean this weekend and spend some time getting to know it.

Regards,
Will

Congrats brother! I'm sure you'll love as much as we love ours. I've started collecting the parts to do a total frame up resto which I am hoping to park it Beginning of next year or earlier to do! And I still need to post pics of mine which I have not done as of yet!

OK now I am getting to know her a bit better...

I took her to a Diesel Fitter for a run around the block and a chat about the condition of the motor etc.

The finding were somewhat concerning:

1) Very underpowered, no poke at all according to him, no pulling through in 3rd and 4th when it should have.

2) Looking at the fuel pump he couldn't see how it had been replaced - it is the original Toyota one (badges and all) so he suggested it may have been taken off and serviced.

3) The thinks the timing has been advanced which he says can be a good thing.

4) The clutch is at the very end of its travel

5) The injectors don't look like they are new or been recently cleaned either.

So it seems that I have been told some porkies. (I guess I am not surprised)

The upshot of it was this....

Maybe the most expensive repair I will have to do sooner or later is clutch - 4-500$ + 3-400$ labour!

Then he said he could service the injectors (if they needed it) and replace the diaphragm in the fuel system (can be done on the truck), do a compression test and set the fuel on the rack for about $400 in a single day next week. If it turns out that it doesn't need the injectors done - ie they actually have been done or look ok he will call me.

He doubts I would need a new pump.

He quoted injectors at $55 each.

Then I started chatting to him about a diagnostic approach to see what could be done in the mean time. This is the outcome of that discussion.

1) I did an oil change. She bled 6.7l of very black oil and I replaced it with Fuchs Titan ultralube 15W40 diesel oil - she tool 6.5 and then another 2 or 3 hundred ml after the motor was turned over.
2) Replaced the oil filter : Z9
3) Replaced the air filter
4) Replaced the fuel filter z169a

Took her for a burl, immediately running a bit free'r - breating better and needed the oil change I reckon.

Once up the road I cracked the rack lock nut and opened her out just under 1/4 turn (counter Clockwise) and reseated the nut.

No black smoke and the power had definitely improved

Around the block and again another full 1/4 turn out - still no smoke and appreciable better depth in 1st and second.

I have eventually left it advanced 3/4 of a turn from where I started today and she is completely different to drive - still no smoke - idles well and does not need to be revved out to get some momentum going...

Questions:

1) How much should I go when gently making this adjustment - I know that I can damage the engine if I push it too far..

2) Will the injector, diaphragm, compression day of work be worth while or should I save my $$s for the clutch :crybaby:

3) Can I get confirmation that the oil I selected is good - I am going to do a second change in 3000km and then only do it every 5-7k but that will give me a starting point.

4) What tyre pressure do people recommend - the handbook seems to suggest 24psi front and 28psi rear - I used to run 15 off road and 30 onroad allround for the Jeep... Any thoughts>

5) I filled her up with 50 L of diesel - are there any additives I should consider at this time to help clean the engine out or anything? It has an 85L tank - is there any point in completely draining it (carrying some fuel and doing a roadside prime/bleed) to ensure that it is all fresh or will that mean crap and gunk get into the motor?? I would like to confirm how much the tank capacity is and what sort of economy I am getting.

That should be about my quota of help credits I have at the moment ;) I still need to give her a real clean tomorrow.

BTW what is the meaning/origin of this symbol - on the rig everywhere and on my keyring - clearly a Toyota logo...

So do you still like the vehicle? I bought one from that had come from AU and could not be happier. I have a question though, Did you find the other rear seat? IF not did you put in a different kind? I am looking for the side that you have because mine only came with the right side small seat.

Hope you are enjoying it.

Mate the truck is superb. It has never given me a hint of trouble. I have really only had to condition the paint, put in a new stereo and tracked down and installed an original pto winch but never found the jump seat. Still looking for that.

Glad to hear you found one and love it - what is the specification of yours?

I wish we could trade seats but that would mean we would have to have two of the ones we got!!

Coah! I love my petrol 40 but I would sell my granny (if I had one) to have a truck like yours. Congratulations and enjoy it.
