I think the technical adjustment spec is 'so it works'. :D

No FSM here either, I fly by the seat of my pants. Sometimes I have to get new pants.

PM me your email, I'll send you the trans linkage FSM pages.

Interesting

It was because the thottle cable was adjusted too long.

Here are the instructions. Search works great. Lots of info already posted here...

but lovetoski, i dont have a problem with tranny kickdown. I have a problem when i select L manually on the shift knob... that's different than kickdown. I stab the throttle, the tranny kicksdown no problem.

DId this ever get solved... ? I was trying to use 1st gear today, and it didn't stay in 1st. Actually I would shift into 1st, it it would stay at 2nd gear rpms going downhill. BUT if I gave it a little bit of gas, it kicked down to 1st gear and went up to 3000ish RPMS, but after letting off the gas, a few moments later it would upshift automatically.

Also, I'm not sure if this matters, but my L indicator light is not working either. Its not the bulb, but the connection to the Park/Neutral saftey switch. I know this because I fixed it for my all my indicator lights, but L stopped working again. Maybe that signal also goes to the computer somehow and tells the computer when to shift the tranny?

OR maybe this is the problem Cdan was talking about with the soleniod? https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=102647&highlight=1st+gear

All other shifter positions work fine, and it shifts normal in Drive. BTW if your R light is out.. you also don't have reverse lights.

Your 'L' indicator light probably isn't working for the same reasons stated above- you're not in 'L'. If you were, it wouldn't shift into 2nd.

Yea I understand I'm probably defaulting to 2nd gear, and I think this is due to the TCM not getting the 1st gear signal (From looking at page AT-29 in the FSM). I'm going to fix the connector plug again from the park/neutral position sensor as I had a problem before with most of my indicator lights not working all the time. I tried fixing it once ( This post )and they were all working for a while... until the L indicator stopped working again. I never tried the actually operation of the tranny when it was working. This would have definitely told me if it was electronic related, or mechanical.

If the park/neutral switch plug fixes this 1st gear problem and indicator light, then it appears that the tranny defaults to the last gear it "knew" it was in. I'll make sure I post up what I find out too.

I don't know a lot about the transmission. I thought the electronics controlled (to an extent) the shift points, not gear selection. I don't know why they'd bother with cable actuation if it's all electronic. I'll be interested to hear what you find, and anyone's information on exactly how the transmission is controlled.

Well.. its fixed. ANd lemme tell ya its a pain to solder on a new plug to the harness side in the same area where the PHH. But its fixed. I now have 1st gear, the L indicator, and it doesn't shift to 2nd. So I'm not exactly sure of the shift pattern when the computer doesn't get the signal of what gear it is in. All I know is that, when mine wasn't getting the low gear signal, it defaulted to 2nd gear. Now.. what I'm wondering... is say the signal for Drive was interupted.. would it default to the2nd gear signal, or the last driving gear it was in? Hopefully if this occured while driving, it would stay in Drive and shift through all possible gears.

With my friends BMW 530, it defaults to 3rd gear and stays in it. So from a dead stop, it has to work some to get going. I'd like to think Toyota is a little smarter, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, the conclusion is, if your gear indicators aren't working and the bulb isn't burnt out in the dash. Check the Park/Neutral saftey switch connector right above the starter. I ended up going to a salvage yard and cutting a nice 8 pin (although only 7 are needed) male and female waterproof connector from an engine harness. Preferably the newer the better and one that is still connected, so dirt and corrosion hasn't got inside. Then make a color conversion chart, since the colors on the harness side on the LC don't match the Park/Neutral switch side. Then solder away.

Mine works when i manually hold it just right with the T-bar. I just need to adjust my shift linkage. I need to get around to doing it!

Glad you solved yours.

When you say works... do you mean the indicator lights or actually being in the correct gear?
It might not be your shift linkage... it may be the Park/Neutral saftey switch needs adjusting on the drivers side of the tranny. You can adjust this a little to line up the gear shifter position to turn on the indicator lights. And I think it would be easier to try this first than the acutal linkage.

Chock wheels, put shifter in neutral, find the switch that looks like a 1/4 piece of dirtyA$$ pie, loosen the 2 bolts holding it and line up the grove on the pivot and the ridge on the casing (after removeing the dirt and grim) SEE PIC AT THE VERY BOTTOM - Its in Park at the moment, but line up the red lines and it should be in Neutral and your light should be ON. All other indicators should work to, after setting this initial point.

This is what the clean version of it should look like:

Thanks for all the info here mate
I have been following your threads as i have the exact same problem. I cant seem to locate a replacement barrel connector. what type of harness did you end up chopping and using?

I actually think I cut a waterproof one out of a newer Infinity/Nissan in a salvage yard. It may have even had an extra wire or two, but the connection was more waterproof than the factory rubber boot. Basically, I wanted to find a newer vehicle with less brittle wires and better connectors, so I had to replace both sides.
