Well.. its fixed. ANd lemme tell ya its a pain to solder on a new plug to the harness side in the same area where the PHH. But its fixed. I now have 1st gear, the L indicator, and it doesn't shift to 2nd. So I'm not exactly sure of the shift pattern when the computer doesn't get the signal of what gear it is in. All I know is that, when mine wasn't getting the low gear signal, it defaulted to 2nd gear. Now.. what I'm wondering... is say the signal for Drive was interupted.. would it default to the2nd gear signal, or the last driving gear it was in? Hopefully if this occured while driving, it would stay in Drive and shift through all possible gears.
With my friends BMW 530, it defaults to 3rd gear and stays in it. So from a dead stop, it has to work some to get going. I'd like to think Toyota is a little smarter, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, the conclusion is, if your gear indicators aren't working and the bulb isn't burnt out in the dash. Check the Park/Neutral saftey switch connector right above the starter. I ended up going to a salvage yard and cutting a nice 8 pin (although only 7 are needed) male and female waterproof connector from an engine harness. Preferably the newer the better and one that is still connected, so dirt and corrosion hasn't got inside. Then make a color conversion chart, since the colors on the harness side on the LC don't match the Park/Neutral switch side. Then solder away.
