I'm doing a tranny swap. I've pulled mine and have a used one waiting to go in...

Here's the skinny:

My trans which is dead has virtually no visible wear on the output shaft or the gear. While the used trans has lots of visible wear.

My questions:

How much work to swap the output shafts? What will it cost in parts? How many hours of work does it take. Can I, a confident shadetree mechanic, do it without ruining it?

I am aware of the McNamara gear, but I don't want to spend any more money. But...if I were to go that route how long will it take to get one shipped to the US.

Thanks,

Hans

Hans,

Go to the 3FE and PM me...

Hans:Short answer: go to the 3FE list, all your questions will be answered there in detail.

Long answer: the entire tranny has to come apart to replace that shaft. It's a HUGE job. I believe the shaft itself is over $700 to buy. Plus you need to buy the A440F rebuild kit. THen you have to pay a shop to do the work, as tearing apart one of these trannys is not for the average Joe. I was looking at doing this on my A440F a few years ago, it was gonna be mega-bucks to fix, like "OMG, I'm gonna have to just get rid of this thing" expensive. Then I found out about the McNamara gear, it was MUCH cheaper.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, yeah looks like McNamara might be the way to go.
