In other news, truck is buttoned up for the most part. Drove it a bunch yesterday and holy sheep droppings is it a new truck. As everyone says, it really wakes up the 3FE. Feels more like I did an engine upgrade.

I really want to thank everyone who has contributed and encouraged me through this. I really thought I was going to have to give up this truck after it ate its second transmission but Mud truly banded together and gave the great gift of community.

Also, tackling a project like this seemed very daunting a couple months ago, now I have much more confidence to tackle bigger and bigger projects, though I’d like to give the big projects a rest for awhile. 😉

strong work! Can't wait to check it out, wish I had been around to help/see the progress. Mine is getting a ride over to AJ's today, hoping it's just the kickdown cable...

So you don’t need to borrow your trailer, me and my truck?

haha, no Im using my AAA service that i pay for and never ever use! just got her over to AJ's a few moments ago

Congrats on getting it all sorted and back on the road!
Awesome, thank you. I realize I don't think I replied to you? Thank you for the offer though, very appreciated.

As I sit within the confines of this glorious truck waiting to pick my son up from school, I reflect upon a few lessons and takeaways from this project…

A) I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but this community is something else, truly.

B) the value of our Mud Vendors, specifically @cruisermatt with his knowledge and his swap specific parts. He took the guesswork out of what I would need and stepped up in many other ways.
His auto shifter block off plate and wire harness were awesome and very welcome by that point in the process. I was so tired and starting to make mistakes, if I would’ve had to fab up a plate or mess around with trying to kludge some wiring it would’ve been far from as elegant as his solutions were. If doing an auto to manual or even an LS swap, hit Matt up, it is well worth it.

C) There are so many little and not so little things that will stall you if you aren’t totally buttoned up. If you are thinking about doing this swap, and you really should be, start gathering now. The parts are getting harder to find and there are a lot of parts to gather. I will assemble a list while it is still fresh but anyone please reach out. I am more then happy to help.

To be continued…

I've been on the fence about putting the 4 speed in my 62 have 33 inch tires. I sold my working auto to a customer and had plans on putting new 5 speed right after I did my dad passed away and my world changed funds went elsewhere. I have an 85 parts rig that has pretty much everything I need to do the 4 speed swap need the little parts because of the 3fe now just need to get those squared away then have the time and my lift open for my own project that's the hard part.

Do it man, you’ll be amazed at how different the truck is. The 3FE was meant to be in front of a manual.

The 85 parts rig, if a later version, will get you far.
I think. I know for sure the 86 and 87 fj60 is the magic spot. There is a lot of parts that are needed off the 60 rig. I totally understand why folks say get a donor rig. It’s a parts store.

really at this point the only used parts needed are +85 tunnel cover/transmission shift boot, flywheel (any +1974 Cruiser), bellhousing and crossmember. Lots of 60's getting those parts removed for LS/auto swaps. 80-84 bellhousings and crossmembers work just fine as well as long as they are matched together.

Luckily I have all those parts. But pretty sure I need different flywheel bolts is what I've read.

Matt,

Any other swap parts you want to link to here have at it.

Tire swap
So I had 32” BFGs on here. So, 30.8” in reality.

The terribly named but awesomely contented site:
Grimmjeeper.com a final gear ratio calculator suggested my tire size was too small. And it really was. So I swapped the 33” BFGs from my 40 (32.5 actual) and what a difference. Haven’t driven a ton at high speed but I can really tell the difference.

Thought I’d loathe the look of swapping these, as if it matters, but I actually like the outcome on each.

Looking sharp - great to see those calculators really know what they are doing...
