now - I do not have these issues.... because I cleaned and lined the tank.

What is the "lining" process you refer to? What material does the tank interior get lined with? I am in the process of restoring my entire FJ40 and have a Con-Fer tank that needs some TLC (no pun intended;) ). I was in the process of blasting the exterior clean and preparing to powdercoat the tank but would like to investigate the acid wash and lining before I do the exterior, since the interior has a bit of rust in it. Since the powdercoat process must undergo a trip to the oven at 400 F for 10-12 minutes, I am curious what the material is that the tank was lined with and if it could withstand the temp during curing of the powdercoating? Any input would be appreciated.

Powdercoat the exterior and then line the interior. You can get information about gas tank liners here.

here are some good details (photos as well) on the lining of my MAF sold Con-fer tank... https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=84831

anyway, it is simply acid washing it inside and out (generally at a radiator shop) which will get off all the scaling and build up then they put inside a liquid liner that will keep the tank inside from rusting again over time when it dries. the liner - in my case - is some sort of red rubbery feeling material that sticks to the inside and covers it 100%.

IMHO, I would not go through all the effort to pull and paint your tank without cleaning it and lining it. the entire process is about $100-150 range and is well worth it if you already have the tank out. there is even talk in that thread of doing it yourself (which I opted to not due as the cost was nearly the same to have a pro with a guarentee do it - and I did not have to dispense with the nasty toxic crap it produces) versus a radi shop doing it.

give it some real consideration.

Here's a pic of my conn-ferr tank that the PO had installed. It was a clean installation and its capacity is around 20usg i think. One problem with it though is that i wanted to flip the rear springs for my SOA project but the pumpkin won't clear the tank, bummer. Good luck!
