I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations on gas tanks that can be placed behind the rear diff under the bed.

I know there are long range tanks that can be purchased from Man-a-fre and others but, I am not sure that I can break off 800 to get one.

I just like to have a tank that can hold 15 gallons plus and will fit nicely back there.

I think the only ones ever designed to go back there are those 'expensive' auxillary tanks such as the Con-Fer sold by MAF. I have seen smaller, self-fabbed versions... but store bought seem only to be the larger auxilary tanks.

Hey!!

The tank is on sale for only $745 right now...

I've been thinking of selling the one that came (new and unused with the skidplate) with the '76 I just sold but seeing these prices I think I'll hang on to it for now just in case I ever decide to use it...;p

I bet buying one of these new once it is all said and done a person could be out $1K or more after installation and everything else...:frown:

Northwest Metal Products makes the tank most places sell. They run $655 plus the ride and the company is great to deal with. I've owned several of their tanks, including the aux in my 4Runner and the tank in my 69FJ40.

FWIW, just be sure if you get a used one to get details on the inside condition. mine was so rusted I recently (search tech for full details I wrote up) had to pull it and have it acid washed and lined as it was sending major amounts of rust and scale through my filters, pump, carb, engine and damaging the needles and seats.

I'd be investing in a filter that had a 1 micron filter element. If your filter is letting this crap through, then what good is it.

well, the issue is not the filter... it is years of rust build-up in the auxillary tank. put the blam where it goes. that being said, I use Napa's best Gold filter and if I have to go buy a 1 micron filter size that is better than that, again, the problem is not the filter. Last, no matter how good the filter - it can only filter out so much for so long before it clogs and breaks down and you change it (and change it and change it and change it). So again, not the filter.

now - I do not have these issues.... becuase I cleaned and lined the tank.

if you search here, you will see the type of junk that came out of my auxillary tank AND photos of the debris in the filter.

Which one?

Just about any pre 1986 CJ tank that was mounted under the bed *should* be close to fitting...filler neck points to the pass side....

You will need to rig up a mounting system for the thing....might be able to cobble things from the donor...

I would be interested in the answer to this question, too

Stock CJ tanks are not as deep as a Confer tank....

Nor are they made from material as thick/durable….
