A closer look at the OEM Cyclonic Air Filter

Sounds like a sealing issue.
Theres not as much dirt as in your pic in my 320000km work (mining)car.
And it doesnt have a snorkle.

Was giving the LC some TLC today, and looked at the air filter. I have one 17801-17020 and one 17801-17010.
Can't see any diffrence between the two, other than that the 17020 has cleaning instructions printed on. In 5 languages + pictogram.

Unfortunately, there is no "sealing issue"; after running the OEM filter for 60000kms and putting up with high silicon levels and lots of fine dust in the base of the filter I decided to go for a Donaldson, but they were on back order so I bought a Coopers, it performed poorly as well, with dust in the base as well, and then fitted a Donaldson and 50000 km later, no dust in the base and low silicon oil analysis results for the past 50000 kms. (Oil analysis every 10000 kms since new). I would run OEM everyday if they can show me they won't let all the crap in..................

I ordered one of these filters: 17801-67060. About 40% cheaper than the -61030 or the 68030.

Metal top and bottoms as opposed to resin plastic. The pleating and pleat count look similar and the dimensions top-to-bottom and the ID of the hole are exactly the same.

What is interesting is that the "top" of this filter is closed, unlike the other cyclonic air filters.

I am going to try this filter on my 80, but need to first drill a hole in the top to accept the locating stud that's on the 80 filter housing.

Thanks Beno! This is good news for me since I can use this filter too. Cheap and washable to boot! I realized these filters were different with the bottom side closed off after Uhu's post #73.

Do you know what other North American market Toyota used these?

Nope. These seem to be here because of the mine trucks in the US and Canada.

There are about 900 in the country.

MUD price on these would be about $16.50 which is a total steal.

That is the smaller HZJ 105 non-turbo filter.
The Turbo HDJ 100 and V8 use the larger diameter (more paper) 17020 filter I quoted earlier.

Ahh, I see you know this but cant get the 17020.
Good to see no one is using a 7*/80 srs filter in a 100 airbox.

There was a delay in obtaining the filter. I was trying to decide on OEM 2nd battery tray, aftermarket or home grown and ship it all at once.
I expect the air box to bolt in and then a little tinkering to relocate the PS fluid reservoir.

no, the top is NOT closed.
The last pic in your post is the bottom of the filter on the 100 series.
There's an indentation in the filter which matches the housing.
Check hosers' posts on the interior of the air cleaner assembly and you;ll see.

The filter is shown here, drying on the front bumper of my BJ74, after having been rinsed as directed. I'd like to buy another one of these elements too, if that is possible . . .

A friend just returned from a business trip that included a visit to Dubia with a 17875-50200 and a 17700-50170 stuffed in his suit case for me so I should be having a go at this mod in a couple of weeks when I get hold of them I'll have to source a filter localy but we get the HDJ100 here so that shouldn't be a problem.
