A closer look at the OEM Cyclonic Air Filter

I think that without a filter gauge like Hoser linked you are likely replacing filters way too often.

seriously the big OEM filters arent replaced that often, and they are washable too anyway.
I posted on another thread the differences between the OEM and K&N which will fit in this OEM assembly. So temporarily you could use that if you cant get the OEM paper filter.

They are hard to find - the assemblies that is, in my state of Victoria. Most of my local wreckers (salvage yards) didnt have 100 series' when i was looking for hoser way back.
Now, here we are quite a few years later. And theres probably a lot more sitting in wreckers yards. But not in Victoria, where i live.

Given the Northern Territory (NT), Western Australia (WA) and Queensland (QLD) are much much larger than Victoria and is where the majority of the outback dirt roads are and where the tourists are...that's probably where most of the wrecks are. Victoria does have dirt roads and really great tourism, but the majority of the major roads are sealed.

NT has the "name" attractions - Kakadu, Uluru, Alice Springs, etc WA is vast and has it's attractions too.

So maybe i need to get in contact with fellow Aussies on here, and some other forums, and see if we can get the Oz OEM boxes at a reasonable price to ship over to you.

NT, WA and QLD are f'ing miles away from me, but if we can source them and post from the source, then cool. But we also run the risk of being ripped off without seeing the goods in person.
Thoughts welcomed.

I wouldn't have a problem buying these sight-unseen b/c they are installed in a protected area of the vehicle and don't take a lot trail abuse. I don't care if it gets to me dirty and scratched up as long as it is structurally sound and all the pieces are there.

Beno, any chance Toyota has these air filters (17801-17020) already available in the US? I can get it... but maybe you can get it faster/easier.

These do not come up as "valid part numbers" which means that these are not available in the US.

If you have one of these and want to get me the dimensions, I can compare to the other cyclonic filters available and let you know if they would be a fit for this application.

Put me down as well. That filter style was one of my most favorite things about my 80 series. It's a brilliant design.

Find me one too pls peter! If ever, Im first in line :)
I put you first in line for those 16" wheels and you still haven't picked them up. It's been 5 months :flipoff2:

I would definitely pay good $$$ for this if I could get my hands on one. Could a pallet shipment be set up from Toyota AU for a group buy?
Used is the only way to go on these. Our NA airbox and resonator retails for $1k. I expect the cyclonic set-up to cost more.

If anybody has connections in the Middle East, the ME spec UZJ100's also received this airbox. JDM 100's did not.

Hopefully Peter or someone else can give me those measurements.

I see this one on ebay for $34 delivered but I can't tell if it is "genuine" OEM. It looks OEM and it says Toyota with the correct part number but it is coming from HK. :hhmm:

Toyota does not have any manufacturing in HK. That does not mean that someone is based in HK buying up Toyota parts and shipping them.

I bet the dimensions of the filter are very similar, if not the same, to the 7x/80 series cyclonic filters available.

Here are the cyclonic filters for the FZJ80 (61030--washeable)/HDJ80/HZJ7x (68030--non-washeable):

https://forum.ih8mud.com/sale-parts/457507-going-australia-taking-orders.html

contact this guy, maybe he will give us a discount on combined shipping if we all get in on a group buy(well in terms of shipping atleast). I think it would be cheaper than what was claimed in this thread. He quoted me $200 for an entire front bumper so I'm guessing a bunch of filters would be cheaper!

Hoser and Peter, is the 17801-17020 the only part that we need? Or are there other parts that will be needed to make it compatible with the UZJ100 here in the U.S.? I emailed the guy who has the contained coming, others should email him as well to get on any possible future lists. I think the container will ship out first week of march, so we should get the details ironed out ASAP.

Thanks Beno. I'll try out my friend's 80 filter when he comes over next time.

LJ, 17801-17020 is just the air filter element. Here is the parts diagram but maybe Onur can help me read it. I see 17700 and 17875. Does the part number need to be 10 digits? Are the 5 digit numbers just used as a reference?

Yes, the part number is 10 digits.

The 5 digit references shown here are called PNC's which are categories for classification purposes.

Okay, under 17700 in the catalog, I see 17700-50182. Does that get you everything outlined in the box in the above diagram? Or is everything sold separately?

Thanks for the lesson on part numbers.

If it's more power, I'm interested.

If we could lock down a reasonable price on these and the logistics of shipping them doesn't kill us on price, I'd definitely be interested in a setup like this, as opposed to dropping the coin on a K&N FIPK or snorkel.

Put me on the wish list. :D

Edit:

I don't want to put him on the spot, but GX-R lives in the middle of middle-east cruiser heaven, everyone and their brother (literally) in Doha seems to drive a 100 series or newer. If all middle east cruisers truly came with these filter setups, he'd be the one to ask about it...

I would be surprised if there is measurably less restriction with cyclonic than our OEM air filter systems in a like to like new filter comparison. The benefit as I see it is extended air filter replacement intervals for those that drive in dusty areas.

^^ This.

Convolutions, bends, and disturbances in the airflow abound in the cyclonic filter housing. Each of these has a cost to efficiency of airflow. If it makes you happy enough that the cost is irrelevant, then go for it. But it's unlikely you'll find anything measurable other than on the wishful thinking butt dyno.

the part number on the one i bought new from Oz eBay is 17801-67060.
It may be an optical illusion but it looks smaller . I'll go out and check it now and edit this post.

EDIT: Ok i'm not going blind in my old age, it IS smaller in diameter, but the correct height.

I have the factory one in front of me and the part number on it is 17801-17020.
cheers

Peter, the filter you bought is for the FZJ105 and HZJ105. Those owners often use the 17020 UZJ filter mentioned above as a drop in upgrade as it is 255mm wide vs 200mm for the FZJ/HZJ one. They both fit though.

And most ME 100's are gas powered. The FZJ100 and the UZJ100 out there both have cyclonic air boxes but they are also different. So be sure it is from a UZJ only.

Excellent! You've obviously researched this a fair bit!! The 105 filter will be good to keep as a spare, so i'll put it in the container that's always in the car instead of in my garage.
