A closer look at the OEM Cyclonic Air Filter

Warren: We (Joe @ Slee ;)) used the air filter dash light for my aux tank. Good idea on using it!
Thanks Dan,
Therefore it was used on an LC, not an LX, so Les will have to check if the lamp is available.

FYI: On a typical Nevada or Utah 2-3 week trip involving hundreds if not a thousand miles of dirt (during the dusty months of course ;)) I typically need to replace my OEM filter element, or at the very least blow it out thoroughly, 2-3 times; no dorkel though.

dude, that's because your fender liner is trimmed out creating a perfect path for dust that your tire kicks up to be sucked into the intake.

Also Dan, the more dust in the filter, the more dust that has gone thru the filter, get yourself a snorkel and protect your engine. Here is a picture of my turbo intake elbow before I put a snorkel on...............

Really? I can see how it might contribute but OTOH its not like the fender skirt was all that well sealed before I went to cut'n and scrape'n :D

You just want me to get a dorkel. :p

And the picture shows the dirt that got thru the filter, the rest is in the engine.............

100TD, hoser...good info.

That last pic from hoser was the dust trap or whatever we're calling it - that was the one i didnt know about.

It does make sense though that when the engine is started that they seal up. But also once the vehicle ages enough it could also fail. Maybe another item for the preventative maintenance page we need to have? Woody? (i posted about potential rust spots in another thread)

I read in a thread on 4wdmonthly.com.au that some of the guys seal them either with duct tape or silicon. Seems a bit extreme. But who knows.

When i got mine back from the snorkel install by ARB, the big one (the one that has clamps on it) was swinging in the wind and one or two big corrugations away from falling off. Dont get me started on installations by ARB
Anyway, it's good to get all the info including from UHU in Norway too.
I'll ask where i get my cruiser serviced if he's willing to order brand new at trade/wholesale prices plus a little bit for his time and see what that price is and then of course maybe me and 100TD and co can find them at the wreckers.

cheers
peter

EDIT: maybe i now qualify for the triple washer nozzle squirters!!!

IIRC in some markets (except USA) 98-02 FZJ's & 'UZJ100's come with a blocked air filter sensor "Sensor, Air Cleaner Warning, 89593-60040 and I expect the wiring is there ready for you to connect one of these directly into your loom.
The diesels run the 89593-60030, which is available from trademotion for $76USD
That's cool. I think I might even see brackets on the airbox to accommodate the sensor. However, I might be waiting a long, long time to see that $76 light to glow! I'll check my dash to see if the light is there anywhere. This reminds me, I still have to wire up the RR diff lock light (pressure activated).

EDIT: maybe i now qualify for the triple washer nozzle squirters!!!
Of course! I'll get to work on that.

Here's those dust relief valves. They were full of clumped sediment when I received it. In the last pic, you can see how the valve opens... I'm guessing when there is positive pressure in the system. There are two metal rods that keep the valve from collapsing under vacuum.

.
For reference: Here's the valve on the early 2000 airbox. Just a tiny rubber flap covering a tiny hole. (3rd shot is the inside)

Thx. Fyi, my airbox is from a 2004.

Les asked me about getting him an airbox many years ago, unfortunately I'm about 500kms from the wreckers..................., he then probably tracked you down.........
Thx. Fyi, my airbox is from a 2004.
So then yours probably wont have the inbuilt holes(protrusions) for the sensor hoses as I think they discontinued them on the gassers? Easy to drill a couple though if you have the lamp on the dash.

Okay, so I had to a chance to test fit the 80 series cyclonic filter element into the 100 series cyclonic air box and it appears to fit. However, I want to double check the filter height and also have a question about fitment.

The original HDJ100 filter element is 255mm in diameter. The HZJ/FZJ105 filter elements are 200mm in diameter.
The FZJ80 filter is 216mm in diameter x 143mm tall.

Can somebody with the HDJ100 filter measure the height of theirs?

The 80 series filter inner hole fits nice and snug and seals well on the cap. The bottom side, inner hole is what concerns me. In the pic, you can see the ridges at the bottom that raise the filter element off the bottom surface. Am I missing a part? On the 80 series, there is a seal.

HDJ100:
143 mm height
254 mm wide (diameter)

No seal at the bottom. (There is nothing there to seal?)

Thanks uHu! I think I understand now.... does your filter element look like the first pic.... only open on one side? The FZJ80 filter, is open on both sides (like 2nd pic). If so, it sounds like the 80 filter wouldn't be a direct drop in... though a block off plate could make it work. Since the filter isn't changed very often, I might as well get the correct HDJ100 filter.

Les,
Buy a Donaldson replacement and fit it, forget the OEM, I think the OEM let in too much dust anyway.
Mine old ones measure 144 and 145mm.
Something to consider is the recess in the bottom of the filter, it has to be correct to ensure a good seal on the top filter sealing surface.
The same filter is used in the UZJ100 and HDJ100, 17801-17020

Donaldson replacement part number for the 17801-17020 is P505959 (I ordered one last week but haven't picked it up)

I have also heard the Donaldson were great.... however, I'm having difficulty finding that Donaldson part number available in the US. Maybe I'll try giving them a call directly.

I think the upper seal might not be a problem since those three pegs on the bottom already support the base of the filter? I'd have to look at it again. It felt snug when I trying to move the 80 filter through the tuna can opening.

Edit: Just called and they are closed for the weekend. Will have to try again Monday.

Edit: Called again and am told that part number Donaldson filter is not available in North America.

I have 180 k km now, same filter I presume. Just wash every 30 k or so, if it looks bad....

[STRIKE]Mr hoser, i dont recall those 3 legs in mine. I'll check in the morning as it is getting late here. Mine is a plated 01 2005[/STRIKE]. i should have struck thru that with the edit below. I DO have the three legs/lugs.

Edit: [STRIKE]No Les, apart from those 3 legs which i am sure i dont have[/STRIKE], that is how mine looks. Edit: i DO have those 3 legs/lugs. No seal. Once you have the top of the assembly connected to the air filter, (even the K&N one) it's difficult to remove top part of the assembly because it seals so well.
cheers

There is a lot more paper in the Toyota filter than the Donaldson.

The problem with OEM is they let too much dirt through, you can wipe it away on the inside of the filter.
You can also see higher levels of dirt in your oil analysis.
I'd like to try an ACDELCO.
