Is it inconsistent? 98-02 Fan kicks on when pressure exceeds 220psi... isn't that saying the pressure is normally less than 220psi?... like maybe 199-213? =)

True indeed. I was thinking that the upper limit when it all kicks off would be fairly close to the upper normal operating range, but that was conjecture and a quick check of the 03 FSM just revealed that the upper total turn off pressure is 455 psi, which I am amazed by as that seems rather high. So yes, plenty of room there to have a 220 fan turn-off setting. But the 199 and 455 are for an 03.

So, what are the "normal", "fan on" and "total shutdown" pressures for a 2000 if anybody knows?

I still think that the OP should measure the pressure to see if he could be just a tad too low for the fan to kick in but not so low that the system is off or generally ineffectual. Faster to do than to futz around with the electrics if it's not an obvious fuse. Well, as long as one has gauges, admittedly.

lessee here is a paste my fsm manual page (that got messed up and missing the pics):

AIR CONDITIONING – PRESSURE SWITCH
AC–91
Author: Date: 2588
2003 LAND CRUISER (RM966U)
PRESSURE SWITCH
ON–VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. SET VEHICLE IN THESE CONDITION
(a) Engine speed at 1,500 rpm
(b) Blower speed control switch at ”HI” position
(c) Temperature control dial at ”MAX. COOL” position
(d) Manifold gauge set setting
2. INSPECT PRESSURE SWITCH OPERATION
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Inspect pressure switch continuity (Magnetic Clutch Control)
(1) Connect the positive (+) lead from the ohmmeter to
terminal 1 and the negative (–) lead to terminal 2.
(2) Check continuity between terminals when the refrigerant
pressure is changed, as shown in the illustration.
If continuity is not as specified, replace the pressure switch.

Magnetic clutch control
Low Pressure Side
ON (Continuity)
196 kpa
(2.0 kgf/cm2, 28 psi)
OFF (No Continuity)
High Pressure Side
3,140 kpa
(32.0 kgf/cm2, 455 psi)
OFF (No Continuity)

My 2001 will only operate the electric fan when the refrigerant is fully charged. With some loss of charge over time, the AC will still function but the fan will not engage.

How can I tell the fan is operating when I am driving?
I am having the same issue - been told the fan is not working and needs diagnostics.

How does one control engine speed at a set RPM?

Wife or.... 2x4 wedged against seat and accelerator. Use seat control to apply throttle!

I have a 2000. I just went through this with mine. It only comes on under certain conditions. Mine was really noisy so I replaced it with a new one. I got a brand new one on ebay for 69.99 compared to my dealer cost of over 200.00. By the way my relay is located under the driver side headlight behind the bumper. Probably have to pull the bumper cover or the platstic shield around the windshield washer bottle. My new one sounds more powerful (my original wouldn't freewheel when spinning the blades due to bad bearing) the ebay fan bolted right up in like 30 minutes. Hope this helps.

Just checked mine today after reading this three...mine was on. Ambient was 85 and vent temp was about 37 sitting in my driveway.

Which is more reliable? :)

So my condenser fan came on as I was filling up the refrigerant...it was just low.
Probably the A/C repair guys didnt really check.

Sigh.

$213 later and I wish I had just had the Freon checked. I should have remembered this post but didn't. I got thinking that this was like a normal AC system that kicked on the electric fan as soon as the compressor engaged. a replacement fan didn't help. Now I suppose that I will hit an A/C shop.

LOL,

Right before I hit send on the above message, I went back outside and let the truck idle for a few minutes, and as soon the engine temp hit 150 ish, I turned on the air and it (the new condenser fan) came right on. Mine has definitely never worked before. I will keep an eye on it and make sure that it keeps working and that I don't have a relay / pressure switch issue. I knew I didn't have a line pressure issue (although I still may have a bad pressure switch.) as my air blows ice chips, my issue was mentally, in that the damn fan was there for a reason and I had never seen or heard it run! There were a few hot days recently where I saw my scan gauge at 202 idling in 106 outside temps in bumper to bumper traffic. The air was still cold, but the 202 got me thinking about the fan again so I ordered one last week.

It's 10 degrees cooler this week so I won't be able to get a real test in. When the temps go back up, I will benchmark it against known scan gauge readings. I would expect to see a minute drop in temps due to the condenser fan and crisper A/C.

FWIW, Mine is an 01 LX so it has the rear air as standard. Pretty sure that the Rear Air equipped 100's prior to 2003 all came with the condenser fan.

HTH somebody else.

I am going to continue to monitor it, but the condenser fan worked perfect today. Once the engine got hot, it kicked on and off with the compressor.

sorry to revive.....clearly these fans have issues..
pressure switch may be the culprit for most....however finding a decently priced replacement when the fan works fine is impossible.
I tested mine recently because the AC just wasn't getting super cold. went and had it recharged (mechanic friend of mine). We started testing with the voltmeter and checking everything. Wouldn't come on but worked fine when a separate 12volt source was connected. Long story short ...we ended up figuring out you can have it run whenever your AC is on period. Just jump the white/black and the blue wire at the switch together and it works fine and causes zero problems.

Retrieved the hidden cooling fan relay. This may be the culprit for my fan never working.

And I believe the brass prong from harness broke off. Not sure the remedy here.

I also hear something rattling inside as I shake it. Pretty sure I need another one.

Will this fan assembly part # 88590-60030 fit an ‘06 LX470 VVTi?

Where is the fan relay?

Where is the fan relay?
If remember correctly, this was for my '99 LC. The relay is right below the driver's headlight. Go in beside front tire and washer reservoir.

Can you clarify that how you jumped them? Did you cut the two wires off the connector and tie them or did you pull the connector and add jumper?
Were talking the pressure switch right, where is that located?
