So is the whole raffle and potluck happening on the Saturday again this time or on the Friday?
I'm trying to plan ahead and figure some things out since my birthday falls on that Sat! :)

You are way ahead of us, but it looking like the "world class HIH potluck" will be on 7/25 (Thurs) and the "most epic HIH raffle" will be the following evening, 7/26 (Fri). We are one day earlier in the week this year, than we were last year so everything is sliding up a day. This isn't final, but it is likely. thx

An evening shot I snapped last year. Just realized that I only have a low resolution version of this, need to track down where I stored the source files.

Beautiful shot! I see my truck too!! Awesome!!!
Haha! You are right! I see both of us there. Nice shot! I love night photography.

I'm 7-28 as well, we will have to have a party, oh wait, there will already be one going on, lol.

What's the deal with all the late July birthdays showing up to the same rally? I'm 7/31 and rarely meet people with a birthday close to mine. Here I thought HIH was just my special birthday present.

Potluck will be Friday 7/26 and Raffle will be Saturday 7/27. Friday and Saturday nights, just like previous years. We are 3 months out, so plan accordingly. Thanks!!

Chris with things being one day earlier this year does that mean the first organized trail runs will be Thursday and the last organized trail runs will be Sunday?

I'll be doing various trail runs on Tuesday and Wednesday. Anyone is welcome to join if they want to explore some of the gulches with me. I've done these trails numerous times over the previous years.

Awesome. I will probably want to get in on that if we get out there early enough. We are debating leaving GA Saturday night and putting in some long hours to get there Monday evening or taking it slow and stopping at a few state parks along the way and getting to Silverton Wednesday. I am leaning more towards heading straight for Silverton. With the time we have it really wouldn’t give us much time to explore the State Parks. But having two extra full days in Silverton would be nice.

Any suggestions on camping in/around Silverton Monday and Tuesday nights? We will have a Travel Trailer.

I'm leaving Saturday as well from Austin and heading straight up to Medano Pass/Great Sand Dunes and then camping outside Salida for 2 nights. Hopefully meet up with some cats coming from Denver while there. Heading down gravel roads on Monday from Salida to Lake City and then over Cinnamon Pass to Silverton on that Monday afternoon.

I plan on leaving Arkansas on Friday, maybe even Thursday. Should be in the area Sunday at the latest. I might want to tag along with you up Medano. Or at least for the drive in on Monday.

I think @marcfj60 had some suggestions around the area but it’s buried in the thread somewhere.

Coming from Michigan and leaving Monday after dinner(so kids sleep thru the night) heading for Denver. Gonna crash in Denver Tuesday afternoon and night so kids can play in a pool at a hotel and then head to Silverton Wed morning.

After the event is over Monday we have to be in Houston area for a family vacation with my brothers on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. Trying to figure out what to do with our remaining time. One thought is to hang out in mountains and keep exploring. Another is to head over to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and experience that. None of us have ever been. Kids will be 9 and almost 7 and pretty active. Anyone have any advice? Once we get to TX we will be at a lake house and hanging out and relaxing for a week with my brother's and their families so staying active until then with camping and off roading/hiking is the thought.

Always do the Grand Canyon if you can.

The views from the North Rim are not great and you have to do a lot of driving to get to some scenic spots. I'd personally recommend going to Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Canyonlands (Needles or Island in the Sky districts), Arches or Capital Reef over the Grand Canyon, unless you're willing to do some hiking or pay for a helicopter ride. There is a nice scenic overlook on the South Rim but it's a LONG drive from Silverton. Just keep in mind all of these places I've listed are VERY warm the end of July so be prepared for temps in the mid-90s to low 100s in the middle of the day.

Do you need hookups or can you boondock with the trailer? There are a few NF campgrounds west of Silverton up along Mineral Creek and FR 585. They're fairly primitive with vault toilets and some have potable water. They are all first come first served, not reservable. Also, there might be a spot available at at Molas Lake still. There were a couple when I looked a few weeks ago. There are some RV parks in Silverton too.
