'97 80 vs. '00 100

If you were looking for an nice truck to drive everyday that would be comfortable for 4 adults. Which would you choose? The 80 has 36,000 miles and is super clean the 100 has 56,000 miles and has some small chips in the paint. The trucks are withing $3,000 of each other. I like the 80 but I know a 100 has more creature comforts. I will have a nice FJ55 (http://homepage.mac.com/ryanandjessaka/PhotoAlbum1.html) eventually, but until then what should I buy to curb my Land Cruiser fix.

Having seen the 55 at Lance's shop in the passed, i think i would DD that thing. Its no 80 or 100 as far as comfort, but that thing is amazing!

I really don't want to beat either truck up.... I would like to drive it stock for 4-5 years, as a DD and use my FJ55 as my wheeler. I just can't seem to buy a car even though it might be more logical. I do enjoy light exploration as well as getting my wife and dog out of DC to go camping. It would really be mall crawling a its best.

Thanks! I am in the middle of possibly re-doing the front suspension, so the 55 might be out of commission for a while longer.

Off topic what does everyone think of using Slee's control arms and coil overs on a 55 with 80 axles? The leaf springs look like they are going to make it almost impossible to route the tierod and drag link.

I'd go with the 100 and I have an 80! Carrying four adults is not the easiest thing in an 80. Rear ingress/egress is a bit of a chore for the rear passengers. This vehicle just isn't made for tall people or tall drivers!

99.9% of the time I agree with you--but the 80 is a great vehicle for tall drivers. I'm 6'4" and it is one of the few vehicles I fit well in. A 94 80 is listed 40.7 for front head room and 42.2 for front leg room. The front headroom on a 2000 is 39.2 and front leg room is 42.3. I have been driving an 06 on occasion---it is like a lexus compared to the 80. I fit just a little better in the 80. Do either of the Cruisers show any signs of rust? If I were you I would get the 80--you can always get a 100 down the road--but 80's with low miles aren't easy to come by anymore....

Besides--the 55 already has the motor and tranny of the 100! Is the 80 by any chance an LX?

Without knowing the price of the 80 or the 100, I'd lean toward the 80. Low mile 80s are getting harder and harder to find as the trucks age. Low mileage 100s will be plentiful for a long time.

I think you may be in the minority here! I took Alvaro for a ride in my 80 and his knees were in his chest practically! He, long with others are purchasing the brackets that move/tilt the seat in such a way so that they can fit better. My co-worker who is around 6'3" typically has the hair on his grazing the ceiling! Sure you can recline like a Pimp Daddy O but if you want a more upright stature, you'll come close to the headliner.

But, you'll agree with me in that the rear seats isn't conducive for tall adults?

I'm basing my answers on the original question of "4 adults driving around the mall"...!!!

He, long with others are purchasing the brackets that move/tilt the seat in such a way so that they can fit better. My co-worker who is around 6'3" typically has the hair on his grazing the ceiling! I do believe I have stumbled on another reason as to why the earlier 80's are superior You may be on to something about carrying 4 basketball players. For the guy that asked about the 80 vs 100--I have a lab and a doberman--the rear windows in the trunk slide open--they each have there own private view window.

94 Head Room----40.7

For the guy that originally asked the question--if you are set on getting a 100 series check out the LX470 line--the suspension will easily hold up an arb bumper--when you brake hard there is no nose dive, need to go over something?--turn the knob-raises the truck, lowers the car when put it in park to get out easier. As of late and LX470 is pretty compareable price wise. Here is a quote:

Just another data point. I'm 6'4", and don't fit real well in the back (middle row) of my friends LX470 either. For cruisin' the mall, a LC just isn't the best vehicle for big people. However, if you're planning on wheeling it down the road, it would be nice to know what year 100. Does it have the rear locker? ('98 and '99?)

The low miles thing is way over rated for a rig that has an overhaul life of about 300k. Repairs and replacement of seals, hoses, suspension etc.. are just as much time related as wear related. 36k indicates a lot of siting and someone that lived very close to work and most trips were short, which is not really a good thing. Make sure it's a wreck that's been in a paint booth most it's life. Obviously having a clean rig is a good thing, but you don't have to have 36k miles to be clean.

For your use, I'd get the 100. More power, slightly better gas mileage, and a little nicer creature comforts. Plus you've got the HG issue on the 80's. One of the nice things about the 80 is that if you plan on doing your own maitenance, it's pretty much been covered here.

Mine switch windows all the time--on occasion the lab will get jealous and try to get her head in the same window as the doberman I want to add the security bars back there over the windows but I haven't becuase of my dogs.

I am a little paranoid about my bird dogs loose in the truck. I carry wire crates secured to the cargo drawer system in the back of the truck. An accident can be instantly fatal to your pal if he's loose.

'Course, if one of the dogs does especially well during a hunt or trial, he gets to ride on the front seat on the way home...
