Wow, I admire your work - someday, someday. Please keep us updated. Have you worked out the details for the AC yet?

Cool to see, everyone says this engine is junk. I might not be too far behind u. what is the interior noise like?

Hats off. You're a trailblazer. Planning any display of heavy fuel power on the outside (I mean, besides French fries fragrances:D), such as a "diesel" or "biodiesel" sticker/logo?

The 6.2 got a bad rap in the beginning because of the converted 5.7 diesel. The 6.2 was a purpose built diesel built by Detroit Diesel. It was designed to provide comparable power to the detuned small blocks of the 80's but return better fuel economy. There were a few problems with some of the block journals cracking (this was remedied in later years) but other than that they have proven to be very reliable engines. The specs are about the same as the 1FZE but the converted Chevy truck I drove felt like it had alot more torque. It isn't unheard of for a 1/2 ton truck to get 25 mpg. I don't expect that with the Land Cruiser but anything over 14 will be good. Check out www.dieselpage.com, there is alot of good information about these engines. It wasn't until I researched this and another site that I decided upon the 6.2, now I can't wait to drive it.
I don't expect the noise to be too bad either, again that was part of the design criteria. I am sure it will be more than the 1FZE but nothing like the Cummins.
As far as the A/C I called a local shop and told them what I was doing and they don't think it will be a problem to make a hose with the Toyota on one end and the GM on the other. I will take it to them shortly after I get it running.
I have some 6.2 Diesel badges from a Chevy truck I am going to put on the fenders. And yes I am going to make sure everyone knows I am running WVO, just want to find a fairly subtle way.
I hope to get it back from the exhaust shop tomorrow and then to get tires sometime this week. I will let you know how it drives for those interested.

Can you post a audio file of noise inside the LC and outside? I am also interested in performance too. Looks sweet.

I will post a video with audio from both inside and out when it is running. I can tell you that compared to a gas engine without any exhaust it is much quieter. I told the exhaust shop that I want it set up a little more free flowing than stock but don't want it loud either, not sure what I will get as far as the exhaust noise. As far as the diesel clatter that is so loud in alot of diesels, I don't think the 6.2's are very loud, at least that is what I have heard. I am building this to be my daily driver so I want it to be comfortable. I have only driven a 6.2 one time (I spoke about it at the beginning of this thread) and I didn't really notice the noise so it must not be too bad.
Performance wise I think it will have a little more "grunt" at the bottom end but when moving down the road will probably be very similar to the 1FZE.
Will let you know though.

sweet. sounds good. Just one qestion. why didn't u go with a 6.5td?

sweet. sounds good. Just one qestion. why didn't u go with a 6.5td?

Simplicity is the main reason. The 6.5td was a consideration but it only came one year (93) without electronics. I knew I was probably already pushing my abilities with the mechanical 6.2. The military 6.2's seem to have pretty good power being the last generation of the 6.2, and I really like the idea of a simple uncluttered engine. The turbo is still an option, the kits are readily available for the 6.2, in fact you can bolt on the 6.5 turbo or buy a Banks kit. Thedieselpage.com actually did a comparison between a turbo'd 6.2 and a 6.5td and the 6.2 actually performed better if I recall correctly. I live in pretty flat country, will probably only pull a trailer a few times a year so I am really not too worried about it. I can't imagine it will be any more gutless than the 1FZE and I was happy with that except for the rare case when I was in the mountains in Colorado where I am pretty sure the 6.2 will suffer as well. The real factor was the fact I stumbled upon a guy selling the military 6.2's really close to me, he checked them out really well and they looked nice so the fact that I could get a "good" engine that easily sold me on it.
Hopefully I can give you first hand knowledge soon!

Looking forward to it.

6.5 td

I stuffed a 6.5L TD-4L80 in my 80-1-HDT in 2005 from a Suburban 2500 97.

Don't mean to hijack the thread. But, tell us about it. Performance, efficiency, reliable. Would you do it again?

That is a nice swap, if I were running 44's I am sure I would have needed the 6.5TD! Would be great to see more pictures. It is amazing how the 6.2/6.5 conversion is fairly popular everywhere but here in the states where the engines are so available. I actually read some of the customer reviews on a couple Australian websites that helped steer me that direction.

LOL I know. I have found the same. Everyone seems to use them elsewhere. I even emailed a company in Australia and they just raved about the engines and why they were the only diesels worth of the conversion.

I guess the grass is always greener, I wonder if they would trade us a boatload of 6.2's for a boatload of Toyota diesels? That was my first choice but couldn't find or afford one! I think I am going to be quite happy with the 6.2, just wish I could get the muffler shop to get to work on it, 2 workers out sick all week! I guess I have waited this long another week shouldn't kill me!

I dont have many pictures but here is one.

Wowo looks cool. How did it run for ya?

Must be kinda hard parking that at the mall, not real practical here but I would love to have it anyway! That must be alot of fun taking those out on the ice. What gearing and suspension is on that?

Do you guys in Iceland make you own fender flares or is there a company over there that manufactures them? They look like the stock ones on steroids. :D
