Yours looks great, can't wait for mine to be in! Looks like you are using the factory brake booster with a line from the vacuum pump? I was told that wouldn't work so I installed a hydroboost, was pretty easy so hopefully I will be pleased. I purchased a military 6.2 without any accessories and the military headers. The headers won't clear the engine mounts so I am waiting for some stock manifolds to come in along with all the brackets for the accessories. The guy was suppossed to ship them about 4 weeks ago but the still aren't here. I live in a fairly small town and have only found 6.2 in the salvage yards and it only has about half what I need. I am going searching again tomorrow since it looks like the parts didn't come in again this week! I will get some pictures posted tomorrow of the little I have done. How does yours drive, what about mileage? I am planning on a WVO conversion once I get it going so I won't be as concerned about the mileage but I am hoping for at least 18 mpg.

I think your talking to me, so I'll answer.

Brakes don't work to good now but I've had problems with the brake booster even before the swap. I'll probably do the hydroboost thing as well because new boosters are pretty expensive.

I had the same problem that you are going through. Military engine, no parts, no brackets, and mine had a bad injection pump. Luckily, I found a seized 6.2 at a local junk yard for $400 with all the brackets except for the AC stuff.

Driving it feels great, more power, better fuel economy, and sounds cool on the road. On my recent trip to Baja I got 18-14mpg and thats with the fuel in my pump turned up for a little more pep.

Hope the search for parts goes well and thanks for the compliment.

My engine suppossedly runs great, a friend heard it running and watched them do a compression check on it before he picked it up for me, so hopefully no suprises once it is in! I went the military route hoping to get a good engine. I have all the accessories, went the v-belt route because that is what the engine was set up for, just waiting on the brackets now. I still didn't get all the brackets in last week so called a local salvage yard to see if they had any 6.2's (they didn't have any a few months ago when I bought the military engine) They have an early 90's with the serpentine belt set-up, wish I had gone that route because the A/C compressor is on the correct side. If I don't receive the set of brackets from the place I have been waiting on this week I may go get the complete serpentine set-up and try to trade in all my accessories for the newer serpentine belt. I did pick up some manifolds so hopefully this week I will get it installed, I am just making sure I get everything done while the engine is out and easy to get to. Still waiting for enough visible progress to post some new pictures.
18 mpg was your highway mpg? That is about what I figured, I was thinking 18-20, what gearing and tire size do you have? What rpm are you turning at the 18 mpg?
What are you using for a tachometer?
Thanks Rusty

By the way, did you get the A/C on yours? It looks like it might be on the passenger side if that is what I am seeing? What compressor did you use and what brackets?

I'm glad to hear you got a good engine but the bracket situation doesnt seem like too much fun. Just remeber that if you get a serpentine setup that you will need a fan that spins the opposite of the pulley system.

I'm running 32's with a 3:7 ratio, and I can cruise 70mph at 2K and get 18mpg as long as there are no big grades.

The tach I'm using is from auto meter. It fits nicely in a 60 series but I don't know what will work for your 80 unless you mount it somewhere like your dash.

Rusty

I havent been able to get the AC or brackets yet but they will eventually be mounted on the drivers side above my power steering.

That tach looks factory in the 60 dash, I don't think there is a spot for mine like that. I am going to play with getting the factory tach to work. I will probably stick with the V-belt set-up I have, just wish the guy would hurry and get my brackets to me.

BTW, I forgot to ask you if your injector pump solenoids are 24 or 12 volt? I know that mine originally came with 24v solenoids and almost all military 6.2s were that way as well?

The IP was 24v so I changed it and the glow plugs to 12V. Another day and still no parts, if they aren't here by the weekend I think I am going back to the local salvage and buying the complete serpentine set-up, what was it you said about reverse rotation fan?
By the way, I got the same 6.2 Diesel badges for my fenders too.
Rusty

The water pump spins reverse rotation with the serpentine setup. If you use a fan off a vehicle with a clockwise spinning engine, it will push the air back toward the radiator. The CCW fan blades are pitched the other way. If you go with the serpentine setup you will need the a CCW fan clutch and water pump too.
A serpentine would be nicer. Earlier V belt equipped 6.2's w/o the rubber padded lower pulley are notorious for belts loosening, squeaking and needing tightening. Not a bad problem, I learned to live with it, but annoying for people that don't like tightening their belts every few months. Knock on wood I haven't had to adjust mine for 8 months.

I am hoping my brackets will come in this week, if not the local salvage also has a mid 80's 6.2 with the V-belt set-up so I will probably just go get all the brackets off of that, just kind of a pain dealing with the local salvage yard. Unfortunately they didn't have either of those cars when I was looking a few months ago but I guess it is good they do now. I will probably stick with the V-belt since I already bought new A/C compressor, Alternator and P/S pump, too much money in all of that to change now. The only upside for me on the serpentine set-up is the fact that the A/C is on the passenger side like the Toyota. I am probably going to take it to an A/C shop and have them run the lines and fill it up so I guess it won't be my problem.
Rusty

Good luck with the parts, and please let me know how the AC works out.

re: factory shifter and 700R4

Brian,

I'm using the factory FJ62 shifter with my 4L60E. Should be the same shift pattern as the 700R4. We made an adjustable length arm for the tranny, and by trail and error, found the correct length for it to work. Simple and clean. I can send pictures next week if you want to see it.

FJ62, Vortec 5.7, 4L60E

Lokar makes and adjustable shift linkage kit I am using (see earlier in this post) it is really nice set-up, not too expensive and works really well, easy to adjust
Rusty

6840, do you have the shifter working? I haven't tried mine yet (still waiting to get everything installed) but am wondering about gears. Does the 4L60E have L, 2, 3, D? The 80 has L, 2, D if I remember correctly, I guess I will have to modify the indicator.
Hope to have some new pictures up next week with my progress, had to find another exhaust manifold so if it fits in the frame rail I should get it installed tomorrow, from there hopefully things will go a bit faster!
Rusty

Yes, the shifter works fine. The FJ62 tranny has the same shift pattern as the 4L60E (PRND321) so it was just a matter of adjusting the relative lengths of the two levers and connecting them with a threaded rod. I can send you some pictures if you like.

I am going to start working on my linkage tomorrow. I have a kit by Lokar which is pretty much the same thing you did, I considered fabbing my own but the Lokar kit was only around $40 so I thought my time was worth at least that much. I finally got the engine installed today once I finally got the correct drivers side exhaust manifold on. I ended up installing a 1" body lift to give me room to run the exhaust and WVO fuel line stuff. Hopefully it will go a bit faster now, mostly just little stuff to do, fuel lines, coolant lines, oil coolers, finish electrical, radiator, the list goes on and on but nothing major is left (I hope!)
I will post some pictures tomorrow.

It's alive! Finally got it started today! I have been doing alot the last few weeks, haven't driven it yet though. Going out to get pictures to post, check back!

We are waiting...:p
