my 91 fj has been having issues starting. it will crank and crank but will fail to actually fire, but sometimes it WILL start as if nothing is wrong with it. i replaced the EFI relay and still nothing. While in gear and traveling she runs like a gem. at a stop light it will drop to a low idle, but not completely die.
my first guess was the Fuel pump, but after it would start and run, i am beggining to think otherwise. will changing my plugs help solve this issue? or is it likely a fuel sending issue?
thanks for reading!

91 fj80 strt 6, automatic.

Sounds like 2 issues.

Crank/no start could be EFI related. Your check engine light (CEL) should be on when you turn the key to the ON position without the motor running. No CEL=no start.

Low or poor idle could be as simple as a torn intake plenum before the throttle body allowing unmetered air into the system. Or a possible vacuum leak.

Does anyone make a kit YET to relocate the EFI relay?

It's been done many times with proven results and its relatively simple.

Search "EFI relocation" and "EFI pigtail".

Skiian, does your truck have a idle speed motor on the side of the throttle body? I don't know how they did it on yours, but if that motor was flaky, it could cause slow idle, and maybe a hard to start condition.
If, when it doesn't want to start, what happens if you barely open the throttle with your gas pedal? I know you're not supposed to use the gas pedal when you start it, but it might give you a clue to the problem.
Otherwise, I'd suggest looking for a vacuum leak.

"I know you're not supposed to use the gas pedal when you start it," Just curious, why would that be bad?

My son's 92 has had the similar symptoms as the OP in the last month. I changed the EFI relay (which had been relocated a few years back) and changed the fuel filter. This didn't really fix the problem. We still experienced occasional long cranking starts. Then we cleaned the cold start injector, spark plugs and ran a can of BG44k through it. Its been two weeks since then and it is starting better now (more consistent, faster starts). Hope it continues.

I'm pretty sure most owner's manuals state that. Probably so the computer has control at startup. However, it could be a good troubleshooting step if the AIS motor is slow to respond.

Phil, try here?:

I did a search for
efi +relocate
to find that post. There were other results, but this one he moved it inside.

Ill say check the fuel pump anyway. I had a similar problem that the efi main relay BUT it was the fuel pump that had lower preasssure than nornal afecting starting and the efi main relay

Have you checked/cleaned your cold start injector? Just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses!
Ended up being corroded wires where the plug goes through the floor for the fuel pump/sending along with a bad pump..
Thanks again!
