Would removing the evaporator be the best thing to do at this point? Since I have the interior removed and the air volume is still not working well.... I can't think of anything else to do at this point!

If you have the coolant out of the system, yes that would be the best thing. If you still have it charged, go to a local HVAC supply house - RE Michel, Ferguson, Johnstone, Lennox, Carrier, etc. and ask for a can of spray coil cleaner that has a longer, flexible wand on the nozzle - so you can get it inside the housing. It's like the scrubbing bubbles for bathroom cleaning - it will loosen that gray crud and drain it out the drain line. You may need to do it a few times. It will also leave a nice scent on the coils. If you take it out, get a coil comb at one of those same places. It will let you straighten the fins out so they look like new.

Wonder if I could just spray that on the coils while it’s in there and see what happens? (Yes- I’m not looking forward to removing that thing!!)

Right, that was what I suggested if you still have it charged. Even if it isn't charged, you can do the same thing without having to remove the case. I'd make sure the drain line from the bottom of the case/housing is cleared out of any debris before hand. You should check it as you spray the coil to make sure it is draining on the other side of the firewall.

I’ve tried everything including removing the fan housing. I can get to the evaporator and clean the areas I can see. Still low air. I guess the evaporator needs to come out and replaced. Any one have detailed instructions on how to remove the cooler box from an 88 FJ62?

Some genius PO may have installed an aftermarket fan that didn't come with a plug. That same genius may have been a twin brother of the PO of my truck and may have neglected to look at the direction of blower motor rotation when he chose which wire to splice to which wire. Sometimes the [should be] super obvious gets overlooked..

The evaporator box comes out fairly easily, though it's a tight fit. Three bolts (I think), and a couple electrical connectors, then wiggle the box out from under the dash. Some like to remove the glove box to make things a bit easier. I attached a couple pics of the box once removed.

You may want to look into a new pressure switch and expansion valve if you plan to have A/C when you're done. They're fairly inexpensive parts, and now is a good time to change them out. Even a new evaporator isn't crazy expensive, maybe about $100. But if your existing is in good shape a good cleaning might be all it needs.

Other things to get:
- some 1/2" x 1/2" adhesive foam for the joints between the boxes
- oil and o-rings if you change out any parts
- 1/4" acoustic foam if you want to re-foam the flaps in the blower box. Often these are crumbling away...

I bought it on eBay. The exact link is no longer working, but it's just like this. Also called charcoal foam. This is a good thread on replacing foam to the flaps.

So I just had one of those “what were you thinking “ moments. The smaller ac line (high pressure I think) attached to the cooler unit near the firewall was seized up and could not be removed from the compressor hose. I cut the aluminum line to remove the cooler unit. This aluminum line attached to the pressure switch on the evaporator. I guess this line is no longer available? I was going to replace the pressure switch since I was replacing the evaporator. I attached some pics. Where can I get another line and how the %€^#} do I get the aluminum fitting out of the end of the compressor hose?? Can’t find the compressor hose either so I’m not having a good day so far. Sigh...
So I’m going to need a new pressure switch assembly with the aluminum tube, pressure switch and probably new ac hoses that aren’t available? Someone tell me some good news. The tequila bottle is looking good right now

It happens. But there should be plenty of those hard lines around - I'm pretty sure the 62 and 60 use the same part. Here is a previous thread on the topic. Some have had custom lines done if you have the existing fittings.

Lines I'm not so sure about, but I would think you should be able to get the remnants of the old fitting out of there. If you can't, then maybe time to post a want ad....

Wow, so I have the same problem and this is the only thread anywhere on the internet addressing this problem.

Here is my issue thus far:
Bought FJ62 and air blew just fine, just not cold. Then, air did not blow at all, like the blower motor did not work. So I took it to local mechanic for full service.

When I got car back, blower motor worked, just no air coming from vents at all., but what little air was coming was blowing cold. I replaced the blower motor and I get same result.

If you all are still monitoring this thread, I have a few questions.
1.) how do you know which way fan is supposed to turn on blower motor?
2.) Will reconnecting the two wires to the blower motor to the opposite wires change the direction the blower motor turns?

thanks,
Boaty the Noob

Hey - mine was literally a switch the wires job. Piece of cake.
