Any comments on an 87 extracab minitruck with a 22RTE turbo engine in it? apparently they were only made for a couple few years... is that because they suck? reliability? longevity? power? mileage?

one for sale locally is five speed and 4x4 asking $2700... I've always wanted a little bang around chore truck, and the idea of a turbo sounds fun

thoughts?

Just FYI, you're in the wrong section. I had a '91 truck with a 22R-E, I always thought a turbo would wake it up just enough to make it enjoyable. I've heard the turbo doesn't really add a lot though :meh:

How do you figure? I thought an 87 mini truck would fit between 79 and 95.

A 22RE with a factory turbo is still not very quick. It ain't no v8. John

Turbo trucks were only made in '86 and '87. They came out with the 3.0L V6 in '88, I think to respond to market demand for more power.

Honestly, I think the whole turbo setup is more trouble than it's worth. They can be hard on head gaskets. But, if it truly has a R151F 5-speed, those trannys are highly prized, I've seen them sell for $800-1000.

I absolutely love my turbo 4runner! I've sunk some money into it. garrett turbo, rebuilt the engine, intercooler, and what not. Although I love it, the money I've put in it and the money i see putting in it in the foreseeable future is kind of ridiculous to think about.

I can feel a huge difference in power going up hills, etc. because I chose a turbo that responds well at higher rpm.

Mileage is slightly less because of my modifications. The ECU doesn't really understand what I've done and so adds more fuel as a precautionary measure. If you keep it stock, you shouldn't have this problem. If you don't keep it stock, the only answer is to get a new stand-alone computer like MegaSquirt.

like anything, if it is/has been maintained, it'll be reliable.
One notorious problem these trucks have is the exhaust side of the turbo cracks not allowing it to build boost. The cause behind this extremely small exhaust and the owners of the vehicles not allowing the turbo to cool down enough before turning the engine off.

Power? as said before, if the stock turbo still works you'll be able to tell. If it doesn't, then you will still be able to tell. With no turbo it's like driving a low compression 22re.

From what I know, they are "suppose" to get similar mileage.

My aunt has an X-cab Turbo pickup and loves it.
I've heard bad things about the OEM turbo assembly, but it's not hard to upgrade.

The 22R/RE is a perfect candidate for turbo-ing because they're pretty beefy in stock form, and can be built beefier within the same price range as a stock rebuild.

you better build ( if that's you really want ) any 22RE or 3RZ with a nice turbo .. there are plenty of turbo kits and options more for 3RZ than 22RE .. but still ..

Take a look around LC engenering just to have an idea about options ..

Oh yeah. If you are building a turbo motor, 3rz is the way to go as far a toyota truck motors.

22rte's are really only good to about 200hp while still being stable and reliable.

But hey, if you've got a running stock 22rte, hell just run it.

What makes me hesitant to turbo an RZ is the fact that it's power band isn't as... functional.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great motor, but it's meant to be revved and revved hard, it has trouble with lower RPM duties.

IMO, Toyota hit the nail on the head hard with the 22R, it's one of the most well-rounded motors I've ever met, and I'm sure a turbo will wake it up good.

If turbo's weren't so dang expensive, It'd be fun to have two. One for low rpm boost and one for high rpm boost.

Maybe some day i'll convince my old man to put a turbo on his stroker crawler with dual cases and a 4.7 in the back. That would be cool to be moving 1/4 mph and have a turbo spooled up ready to go. Eh someday right?

Not "made" but rather imported. They were imported from 86~88 in 3 models. The 4runner, the pickup 4x4 and the pickup rwd.

I had an 87 turbo 4x4 regular cab in the early 90's. It was about as quick as a 3.0 V6 which meant it wasn't too fast. Certainly quicker than a regular 22RE though. I never messed with the engine in mine but a friend with an 86 put a cam in his and used a cheap fuel pressure regulator somewhere inline with the wastegate to allow more boost. According to the boost gauge he installed it was running 19 pounds. Went really good for 3 days. Then I believe he blew the head gasket as it started blowing all kinds of white smoke. He pulled the engine and put a V8 in it after that.

"made" meaning "manufactured" = "built" = "constructed", and since they were only made in Japan, yeah they had to be "imported".

I'll have to check my '88 FSM, but I don't remember seeing any mention of the 22RE-T in there, but I don't think the 3VZ-E is in there either. Perhaps it was introduced mid-year.

19 pounds of boost... man that's nuts. Good thing the HG blew before he ended up with an oil pan full of conrods.
