I don't think that I've ever seen a winch drum grooved quite like that! I'm guessing that winch isn't bumper jewelry!

It's not grooved at all. It's rust stains from the poly rope being wet. It wipes off. I had glass beaded it back in 2011 or so. Definitely has been used though.

I think it's obvious that I'm all over the place right now as far as the next steps on this build. Because of my upcoming surgery and downtime I'm just trying to think ahead. I can at least make a tentative plan and get parts coming.

I checked out the windshield kits, which lead to some YouTube videos of installation and now I see some people go with a rubber seal and no trim vs the glue in method and cover with trim like original. Anyone tried it?

I cleaned paint out of a bunch of bolt holes and installed the hood hinges and the fenders off the 88. No butyl tape or bumpers, more just for mock-up. The hood actually fits fairly well for being aftermarket and pretty straight after being on the side of the house for 3 years and knocked down during storms a few times. The driver side fender is chingered because I flopped the 88 a while ago.

I cut the minimum needed to get the hood to close. I'll cut more once I get the scoop. Before I do that I need to fabricate the shock tower brace and make sure everything will fit under the scoop I'm considering.

I decided to pull the winch apart. Mainly to see if my motor had a splined or keyed shaft and to make a parts list. This winch is not so pretty but it worked whenever I needed it.

I found a cracked brake disc.

I'll get parts ordered. I have a 9.5 XP motor and Albright contactor on hand. I might paint it while it's apart this time. :hmm:

The Albright and 9.5 XP are hands down the best mod for the 8274. I may have missed it, but are you doing your own front bumper for the winch?

The drum is something else! I've not seen that happen here on the Lower Left Coastal Desert where the wind blows the rust in right off the ocean.

I forget, poly or steel line for the rebuild?

There are more powerful motor options for the 8274, but I highly doubt that they're as economical. $300 and $425 options here:

I took a little time today to dink around on the winch. Parts for these are definitely available but pretty pricey for what they are. One brake disc is about $90 to my door but I can get a complete kit with both discs and other parts from Summit for a little over a hundred bucks.

Any of you winch guys have a go to place for parts? I saw that the armature shaft bearing rubber shield is disintegrating so I'll get a 6203 bearing somewhere. The free spool shift fork has a ton of wear on it. It still works but I may replace it.

I had to watch a @gnob youtube video to confirm I need to use the washer that comes with the 9.5 XP motor. Without it, there is way too much shaft end play. BUT......there is zero end play with it once I tighten the two bolts. It doesn't bind though. I may shave the washer a bit. :hmm:

Feel free to offer advice or scold me if I'm screwing up. I'm just mainly going to freshen it up with a couple upgrades vs the double bowmotor beasts with air operated free spool and high capacity winch drum. They are impressive and look like they'd be fun to build though.

I've bought Warn winch parts from two sources. Warn has a nice store over on Amazon. Prices are good, selection not so much. Shipping can be slow.

The other source is Montana Jacks. Really good service, prices are OK, not great, but he does have the selection.

When I rebuilt the 9.5TI Warn directed me to Montana Jacks. The package was one of the best packed packages I’ve ever received. It was so organized and everything had a spot so nothing was broken.

My grandfather would build that wear up with brazing rod, and then grind & file it back down to size.
