My Warn 8274 has stopped rewinding the cable, even though the motor turns over normally. At first, the brake was slipping under serious tension. Then it (the brake) was so weak it wouldn't even grip enough to coil the cable back onto the spool.

I just pulled the brake assembly and found one fiber disk clean and dry and the other oily and broken in one place (see pic), but would this explain a complete brake failure or do I need to look deeper?

That sounds like a gear issue to me. You sure it didn't slip into freespool mode?

I thought the brake only came into play when powering out while under load.

Thanks for the reply. Man was I worried you were right about slipping into free-spool mode!

It's in gear and turning the inner brake disk (part #43), but the brake assembly is not clamping down on the friction disks, and the outer brake disk (part #37) isn't turning at all. I thought the brake assembly was used as a clutch (more or less) to transfer the power from the motor/gears to the spool itself?

This is my first time working on a winch so I really appreciate any thoughts you veterans might have. Cheers. JD

I was worried about that.

A Warn cam gear is $150?!? What else was damaged?

Call Warn and find your nearest authorized service center. They may have individual parts or even parts winches to pull parts from. Good luck.
