I bought an 8274 off a guy a couple of years back and it has been sitting on my workbench ever since waiting for me to get around to building a bumper...I am getting around to building the bumper. During the planning I decided to test the winch, the solenoids clicked, interesting (btw worked when I bought it). Decided to test the motor with a 55 amp battery tester...no dice - appears to short. The motor is full of rust, I removed the brush assembly, cleaned it and the front of the drum. Still nothing - almost like a short. The armature looks ok, at least it seems to.

Where do I go from here? A new motor - Ebay - Warn Direct? Am I missing something? I am thinking that there is water damage in the motor- sitting, old rust. If it is any consolation, the rest of the winch is in great shape. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Take a look in this section for 8274 threads: Winching and Recovery - IH8MUD.com There are some rebuild threads, and I know I've seen posts suggesting a source for motors. (flintknapper has posted the source I believe)

You might just take it into an electric motor shop to get an experts opinion. Even in the small town of Corvallis Oregon we have one, so I would think they must be everywhere.

I was convinced my motor was shot and all sorts of testing with a battery gave bad results. It wasn't until I had cleaned every terminal, new nuts, washers, contact paste, and made sure of a really good battery earth, etc did it come to life so I reckon get it checked out.
Hope this helps:wrench:

I would guess that a 55 amp battery charger just doesn't have the juice to spin it. Motors don't go bad just sitting on your work bench. Why not put a battery on it?
