8274 help needed

just picked up a warn 8274(could be -50 not sure) off internet sold site unseen, the PO posted that he tried it and the winch seemed fine but with a loose conection possibly in the remote and needed a new bearing(which is the break that is shot)
So took lots of bits off. checked the solenoids and 2 are shot The other 2 pull in when power is applied.
But how can I test if the moter is shot with direct conection to a battery and a test meter, which cables to where etc. Field 1, field 2, Armature, ground.?? I think I've been ripped and just want to salvege what I've got

I went down to the local warn dealer to day to see about 2 new solenoids or a newer solenoid replacment pack and he had the 2 of the old style ones sat there for free, so a bit of cleaning up and that side of the problem should be sorted.

Still not a 100% on testing the motor, If it's shot will it damage the new(20+ year)solenoids?

1 - make sure there is no continuity from L1/L2 posts to the body (ground) - if there is then there is a short somewhere internally

2 - hook a 12V positive power source to either L1 or L2

3 - hook a 12V negative to the body or third terminal (the one at the other end)

when you hit step three be prepared for the motor to jump (if it is loose on the bench) and to disconnect immediately if you smell smoke or see stuff melting

if the motor is in the winch i do not believe it will harm the niods (not my fault if it does)

but if it is in the winch you can use the noids to power the winch normally.

I used a battery charger set at 50amps to test my motors in my 8274 rebuild thread here

Cheers for that I'll have to wait till tomorrow as training day at work to day so this is the first time in months I've not had work clothes on and I've got a lady coming over so I'll let you know how it goes later( the motor that is)

Thanks Awl_TEQ I put the winch back together this evening and all goes well
It certainly made me feel better being able to check the mtoor out before connecting everything else
